About me and my therapy practice
I work with adults who appear highly functional on the outside but feel emotionally exhausted, internally fragmented, or disconnected from themselves underneath.
Many of the people I work with are intelligent, capable, and deeply adaptive. They may be professionals, founders, creatives, leaders, or people who have spent much of their lives learning how to perform, cope, achieve, or fit in — often at the cost of feeling fully alive, emotionally honest, or internally at ease.
Some come because of anxiety, burnout, grief, relationship difficulties, trauma, identity questions, neurodivergence, or major life transitions. Others arrive with a quieter sense that something about their life no longer feels true, even if it looks successful from the outside.
My work is not focused on helping people optimise performance or simply manage symptoms more efficiently. Together, we explore the deeper patterns beneath emotional distress — the coping strategies, adaptations, identities, and fears that once protected you but may now be limiting your ability to live fully and honestly.
I offer a confidential, reflective, and psychologically grounded space where you can think clearly, feel honestly, and reconnect with yourself beneath the pressure to constantly perform.
I am Bukky Maybank, a UK-registered psychotherapist and former Magic Circle lawyer. Before retraining as a therapist, I spent over a decade working in high-pressure legal and commercial environments, advising senior leaders, founders, and organisations where clarity, discretion, and complex decision-making mattered. That experience informs my understanding of responsibility, performance pressure, emotional suppression, and the hidden strain often carried by high-functioning individuals.
I was also born in Nigeria and raised between cultures, which shapes my sensitivity to identity, belonging, adaptation, and the experience of feeling different across environments.
Practice description
I work integratively, drawing from existential and humanistic psychotherapy, relational and attachment-informed approaches, Jungian and depth psychology, mindfulness-informed neuroscience, and contemporary understandings of neurodivergence and trauma.
Therapy with me is collaborative, reflective, and depth-oriented. I aim to create a space that is warm, steady, thoughtful, and emotionally honest. I am not a passive therapist. Alongside careful listening, I think actively with clients — helping illuminate patterns, contradictions, defences, and possibilities that are often difficult to see alone.
My approach is especially suited to people who:
- feel emotionally exhausted despite appearing capable
- struggle with overthinking, masking, perfectionism, or chronic adaptation
- feel disconnected from themselves, their bodies, or their desires
- are neurodivergent, highly sensitive, or have always felt different
- are navigating cross-cultural identities or competing expectations
- want deeper change than coping strategies alone can offer
- value honesty, depth, reflection, and psychological insight
My first session
I offer a free 20-minute introductory consultation via WhatsApp.
This is an opportunity for us to explore whether working together feels like a good fit.
Many people come to therapy feeling unsure how to explain what is wrong. That is completely okay. You do not need to arrive with a perfectly formed explanation of yourself or your life.
In our first session, we will begin exploring:
- what has brought you to therapy
- what feels difficult, stuck, or emotionally costly right now
- the patterns or pressures you may be carrying
- what you are hoping for from therapy
- how I work and whether the approach feels right for you
There is no pressure to commit immediately. Therapy works best when there is a genuine sense of safety, trust, and readiness to begin the work together.
What I can help with
Abuse, ADD / ADHD, Addictions, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Business coaching, Cancer, Career coaching, Child related issues, Coaching supervision, Cultural issues, Depression, Development coaching, Disability, Executive coaching, Health related issues, Identity issues, Infertility, Leadership coaching, LGBTQ+ counselling, Life coaching, Loss, Menopause, Mood disorder, Neurodiversity, Obsessions, OCD, Personal development, Post-traumatic stress, Pregnancy related issues, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Sex-related issues, Sexual identity, Sexuality, Spirituality, Stress, Trauma, Vegan allied, Women's issues, Work related issues
