About me and my therapy practice
I am trained at Masters' level as a counsellor and psychotherapist to work specifically with children, young people and families. I am also a teacher with many years' experience in both primary and secondary schools. In addition to my private practice, I have also worked as a School Counselling Project Manager with a school mental health care provider. In addition, I work as a children's counsellor with a large national charity.
I offer a safe, warm, confidential space so your child or young person can explore their thoughts and feelings. In a supportive, non-judgmental space, they can share their worries, frustrations, or fears. I am there to listen and help. A trusting therapeutic relationship supports them to find new ways to manage their struggles more effectively.
As an integrative psychotherapist and counsellor, I use a range of therapeutic models and strategies to ensure an approach which suits you or your child's specific needs.
Practice description
As a psychotherapist, I help children and young people understand their emotions, develop healthy relationships and build confidence and self-esteem. This often involves working with children and young people experiencing anxiety and depression.
I am qualified at Masters level in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy with Children, Adolescents & Families. I also have 20 years' experience working as a teacher. I have a private practice as well as working for a mental health charity counselling children and young people.
I work with children and young people with a range of challenges such as: anxiety, depression, self-harm; low self-esteem; autism; bereavement; social anxiety and parental separation. I work cooperatively, via play therapy with children and use a collaborative approach with young people. A strong therapeutic relationship is at the heart of the work which takes place in a safe, confidential space.
My first session
In my first session/s I work with the parents to gain knowledge and understanding of the challenges experienced by the child or adolescent. This may require more than one session. Parents can be seen separately if this is helpful.
In the case of an adolescent, I have an additional session/s with them to try and get a greater understanding of their concerns.
With a child, the first therapy session/s may need the parent/s to remain in the therapy room to create a sense of comfort and security for the child. When appropriate for the child, the parent/s can then leave and allow the child to participate in the play therapy with me.
If a child is 4 years-old or younger, then a parent remains in the sessions with their child.
