I see clients at my Maghull room on Thursdays, between 10am and 9pm. I currently have spaces for new clients, including evening appointments.

If Thursday doesn't suit you, I also work from my Anfield practice on the other weekdays, and I offer online sessions anywhere in the UK.

The first step is a free call so we can talk about what's bringing you to counselling and see if I'm the right fit for you. You can book this through the link on my profile, or get in touch by phone or email.

I'll update this section if I'm taking any time off.

About me and my therapy practice

I work in a person-centred way. That means I see you as the expert on your own life. I won't diagnose you or tell you what you should do. My job is to give you a space where you can talk openly and be listened to properly, so you can make sense of what's going on for you at your own pace.

A lot of my work focuses on feelings. Sometimes we carry emotions we haven't been able to put into words, or we keep going round the same thoughts without getting anywhere. In our sessions we can slow things down and look at what's underneath, which often helps people feel less stuck and more able to move forward.

I follow your lead. Some people want to talk through something that happened recently, others want to look at patterns that go back years. If practical tools would help, I'm happy to bring those in too.

Before I trained as a counsellor I worked in betting shops for many years, and a lot of people opened up to me there. I'm down to earth and I'm not one for jargon. You don't need to know what you want to say before you come in.

Your first step is a free call with me. It's a chance to ask questions and get a feel for whether I'm right for you, with no pressure to book. If we decide to work together, we'll agree a contract in the first session covering confidentiality, fees and how sessions work. We'll also review how things are going along the way, so you always have a say in the direction of our work.

At Maghull I see adults, young people and children from age 5. With children I adapt how I work, using play and creative activities alongside talking so they can express themselves in a way that feels natural to them.

I'm a BACP accredited member and I have regular clinical supervision, which is part of keeping my work safe and ethical.

Practice description

David Lewis Counselling is my own private practice. I work from two locations, Anfield and Maghull, and I also offer online sessions anywhere in the UK.

My Maghull room is a private room just inside the front door, so you won't need to walk through anyone's home to get to it. The room is quiet and comfortable, with soft lighting and calm colours, and it has been set up for counselling. There is one small step down into the room. It isn't suitable for wheelchair users, but it's fine for most people with limited mobility. If you have any questions about access, just ask me.

I'm at Maghull on Thursdays, from 10am to 9pm, so daytime and evening appointments are both available.

I work with adults, young people and children from age 5. Some of the things people come to me with include anxiety, depression, trauma, low confidence, life changes and feeling stuck. I also work with men's mental health, and I have specialist training in pregnancy and baby loss, including miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, birth trauma, infertility and pregnancy after loss.

Sessions are £50. I offer a reduced rate of £40 for students, NHS staff and people on a low income. Payment is taken on the day. I'm also registered with AXA, Aviva and Vitality, so if you have health insurance it may cover your sessions.

Everything you share with me is kept confidential, within the limits we'll go through when we agree our contract. Your records are stored securely in line with data protection law, and I'm registered with the ICO.

If you'd like to find out more, book a free call with me. We can talk about what's bringing you to counselling and whether I'm the right person to help.

My first session

Before we meet, I offer a free call. It gives you the chance to tell me a little about what's bringing you to counselling, ask any questions and get a feel for whether I'm the right person for you. There's no pressure to book anything after the call.

If you decide to go ahead, I'll send you a link to book your first session. This is charged at my usual rate of £50, or £40 if you're a student, NHS staff or on a low income.

The first session is a bit different from the ones that follow. We'll go through a counselling contract together, which covers confidentiality and its limits, fees, cancellations and how I keep your information safe. I'll also ask you some questions about what you'd like to get from counselling and a bit about your background, so I can understand where you're coming from. You only need to share what you feel comfortable with.

There will still be plenty of time to talk about whatever is on your mind. By the end of the session you should have a good sense of what working with me is like, and we can agree how often we'll meet.

If you're bringing a child to see me, the first session will include time with you as a parent or carer as well, so we can talk about how things are at home and school and agree how the sessions will work.
