About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I’m Hywel, and I offer therapeutic support to help you make meaningful change in your life. I am qualified in Gestalt Therapy, having gained my Diploma at the Gestalt Centre in London. My practice is trauma-informed, Covid conscious and climate conscious.

• Are you finding it difficult to talk about what is going on for you with the other people in your life?

• Are you finding it increasingly hard to carry on ‘as normal’, and feel a need to change something?

• Are you finding it difficult to be the person you really feel yourself to be inside – your ‘true self’?

• Are some parts of you feeling annoyed or frustrated with other parts of you for what they feel, or the decisions they make?

Such crises of the heart and soul can affect your feelings of wellbeing and aliveness. In my experience they can manifest in a range of outward symptoms:

• You might be feeling anxious or depressed, burnout or shame.

• You might be experiencing a crisis in your relationship with other people – friends, family members, partners, colleagues.

• You might be experiencing addictive behaviours that feel distressing.

• You might be feeling stuck and lacking a sense of agency.

• You might be aware of feelings of trauma about things that have happened in your life.

• You might feel distress at the state of the world, or be struggling for meaning.

• You might be finding it hard to define what’s wrong.

• You might be struggling to feel much at all.

Some of the questions we might work through together:

• Are you living your life according to your own values, or someone else’s?

• Are you spending your time doing what you think that you should do, or what is really meaningful to you?

• If you weren’t worried about failing or about the opinions of others, then what might you do?

Telling a stranger about issues that feel extremely personal can be daunting, so I offer an open-minded, confidential space, with a combination of support and challenge to help you work through the issues you are struggling with.

Practice description

I use a method based primarily on Gestalt Therapy. This means we will look at the whole of your experience, how some parts of that experience affect other parts, and the impact that it may be having upon you. We will combine a focus on the present moment, helping to increase your awareness of what is going on for you right now, with a focus upon how you may feel about what has happened in your past, and your orientation towards the future. I am also influenced by other approaches, including psychodynamic practices, Internal Family Systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and the Neuroaffective Relational Model.

However, over and above the type of therapy used, I know it is the therapeutic relationship that we build between us as client and counsellor, that is most crucial to successful therapy. I don’t see my role as to offer you advice, but rather to support and facilitate you to access your own internal awareness about what is going on for you, and your ability to make new choices and/or changes for yourself in light of this increased awareness.

Each session lasts for 50 minutes, delivered online via video call. People choose to have online therapy for many different reasons, and most find this to be a very useful and effective way of having therapy sessions. For some people, it can actually be preferable to face-to-face therapy, as it allows for more flexibility, and it means that you do not have to factor in the time or the cost of travel, rather taking the session from somewhere you feel comfortable.

My first session

I offer a free 20-minute phone conversation before any sessions are booked, for us to find out more about each other. This is an opportunity for you to tell me a bit about yourself and what brings you to therapy. I know that it is incredibly important to find the right therapist to work with, so it is also an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about the way that we might work together.

On booking your first session, I will send you confirmation and the Zoom link for the session. During the first session, we will talk about what has brought you to therapy - your story.

After five or six sessions, I generally like to review together how the therapy is going – discussing what has gone well, what has been more difficult, and any adjustments that we can make so that the sessions work better for you.

I believe that it is also important during therapy, for us to consider how what happens in the therapy space may be applied in the world outside that space. In this, we will only ever go at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for you.
