About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Hayley. Finding a counsellor for your child can feel daunting. Based at Durham Wellness Space in Coxhoe, I provide a warm, safe, and confidential space where children and young people (ages 4–18) can explore their experiences at their own pace.

My practice is grounded in an integrative approach. Because no single model fits everyone, I blend different theories and techniques to meet each child where they are, tailoring sessions to their unique personality and comfort level. I am fully qualified, having completed my clinical training on a BACP Accredited course at the Northern Guild.

My background includes specialist experience across educational environments via The Bungalow Partnership and trauma services.

Children often lack the words for complex emotions. I use creative resources to bridge the gap between feelings and speech, allowing them to express themselves without pressure. My practice is proudly neuro-affirming. I work adaptively with neurodivergent (neurodiverse) children and young people, ensuring the environment and our activities accommodate sensory needs, communication preferences, and individual processing styles.

Depending on your child's age, development, and preferences, our sessions may involve:

Sand Tray Work

Games

Crafts and Drawing

Life Story Work

I support young people navigating a wide range of challenges, including:

Anxiety and Low Mood: Managing worry and panic.

Emotional Regulation: Navigating big emotions like anger or overwhelm.

Trauma: Support for domestic/sexual abuse or painful life events.

Sleep Challenges: Helping settle nervous systems for better rest.

School: Handling academic pressure, bullying, or stress.

Relational & Family Difficulties: Navigating separation or relationship dynamics.

Grief and Loss: Processing bereavement and transitions.

Practice description

My private practice is run from a quiet, dedicated, and welcoming therapy room at Durham Wellness Space in Coxhoe. The room is specifically equipped with a variety of creative resources—including sand trays, art materials, and games—designed to put children and young people at ease from the moment they walk in. There is comfortable seating for older teens, and plenty of space for younger children to safely explore and express themselves. Ample parking and a comfortable waiting area are available for parents during the session.

How I Work With Parents and Carers

While the therapy itself is confidential and focused entirely on the young person, I believe that collaborating with parents and carers is vital for lasting change. I offer periodic, planned review sessions with parents to discuss general progress, offer guidance on supporting your child's emotional regulation or sleep hygiene at home, and ensure we are all working towards the same goals.

My first session

I understand that finding the right "fit" for your child is incredibly important, especially when they have been through difficult times or have specific support needs.

Initial Consultation: We will begin with a brief, free phone consultation where you can share what your child is currently experiencing and ask any questions about how I work.

Assessment: If you choose to move forward, we will arrange an initial assessment at Durham Wellness Space to explore goals and ensure your child feels comfortable and secure in the therapeutic space.

Ongoing Sessions: Sessions are typically held weekly, providing the consistency, predictability, and routine that children need to feel safe.
