About me and my therapy practice

I am an Integrative/Attachment Counsellor and qualified Adoption Support Counsellor.  I have worked over 15 years in the mental health sector for local and national charities, higher education and more recently the equality and diversity and Care Experience sectors.

I work as an attachment psychotherapist remotely with adoptees (aged over 18), adoptive parents, birth parents and clients who are care experienced.  I tailor my approach to the unique complexities of the lifelong emotional roller coaster of adoption can bring to those in the adoption triad.   Please note that as an independent counsellor I do not provide 'intermediary' adoption related services such as tracing birth family members and/or obtaining records; also, I cannot offer counselling to family members regarding current/ongoing legal matters.

I am also an accredited Coach for clients who have a problematic relationship with alcohol, be that emotional drinking or what is often referred to as 'grey area' drinking.

My approach of attachment focussed psychotherapy enables clients to untangle and explore issues such as identity, infertility, adoptive parenthood, feelings of rejection and/or abandonment, loss, grief and shame, alongside unhelpful behavioural patterns which may be rooted in adverse childhood experiences and attachment trauma.

Practice description

I work using on-line platforms within a safe, confidential and welcoming environment.  I also offer face to face counselling to local clients in a private and easily accessible room in the centre of town.  I believe this approach offers both flexibility and access.  I work within the guidelines of GDPR and registered with the JOIC ensuring confidentiality and safe  practice.

The first step is a phone call or email which explains in more detail how I work, to establish client expectations and ascertain which approach would be best for the therapeutic relationship.  We will also discuss confidentiality and if client has any questions about therapy.  Thereafter, sessions are up to an hour.

I send clients a Counselling Agreement (outlining the cancellation policy, fees, etc) which is signed by both parties before the first session.  Subsequent sessions are then up to one hour.

My first session

The first session can be very much exploratory, particularly if the focus is around adoption.  However, sessions can also be forward moving and progressive, depending on what a client brings to the session.

If sessions have an alcohol free focus, clients are asked to complete a questionnaire to establish if there are any risk indicators which would be explored together to find the best way forward.
