About me and my therapy practice
Welcome – I’m glad you’re here.
You may be coming to therapy with a clear sense of what you want to work on, or you might simply know that something doesn’t feel quite right. Either way, reaching out for support can feel like a significant step.
I’m Jo, an experienced trauma-informed counsellor with a humanistic, person-centred foundation, working across specialist trauma services and private practice. I work both online and in person.
I aim to offer a grounded, respectful, and collaborative space where you can explore what has brought you here at your own pace – a space where you can feel met, understood, and able to belong as you are.
I work alongside you to help make sense of difficult or overwhelming experiences, including how you’ve coped along the way. Therapy can offer space to understand patterns that have developed over time, often as ways of surviving, and to find new ways of relating to yourself and others with greater clarity and compassion.
My work includes supporting adults affected by sexual violence, coercion, and abuse, as well as relational and developmental trauma. I also work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm, and have a particular interest in supporting those navigating fertility issues or childlessness, and lives and relationships outside more conventional family structures.
Alongside my private practice, I currently work within specialist trauma services, including Trauma Foundation South West and New Pathways. I have also held a senior leadership role as Director of a trauma-informed, intersectional not-for-profit therapy service.
Having lived and worked overseas for many years, I have learned the importance of approaching people’s experiences with cultural sensitivity, humility, and curiosity. This continues to shape how I work, particularly my attention to difference, power, and context in therapeutic relationships. I particularly value working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Practice description
I begin with a free online consultation as an opportunity for us to connect, for you to share what you are seeking support for, and to hear more about my approach.
I work from a humanistic, person-centred foundation and take a pluralistic approach. What this means in practice is that I work collaboratively and tailor my approach to you, drawing on different therapeutic approaches as needed. I recognise that different people - and different stages of therapy - may call for different ways of working.
Alongside talking therapy, I may integrate somatic and experiential approaches where appropriate. This might include gently noticing what is happening in your body, paying attention to emotions as they show up in the moment, or slowing things down to explore feelings, sensations, images, or impulses as they are experienced. This is always collaborative, carefully paced, and guided by what feels supportive for you. I offer sessions online nationally, and in person from a calm, welcoming therapy space in BS5, near St George Park.
My first session
Before beginning therapy, I offer a free 20-minute consultation. This is an opportunity for us to connect, for you to share what you are hoping for from therapy, and for me to say a little more about how I work. It also gives us a chance to consider together whether working together feels like a good fit.
If we decide to go ahead, our first session will focus on gently exploring what has brought you to therapy and what you would like support with. We’ll take time to think together about what feels important for you, any questions or concerns you may have, and how we might work in a way that feels safe, supportive, and manageable.
From there, we can begin to develop a shared understanding of your goals and a collaborative sense of direction for our work, which we can return to and adjust over time as needed.
