About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I’m Debbie, a qualified integrative counsellor that provides online therapy to adults across the UK. Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, and it’s important that you find a therapist who feels like the right fit for you. On this page, I share a little about who I am, my background and how I work.
Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years working in business and local government. Working as a personal assistant gave me insight into the corporate world and the pressures that can come with it. I have also worked in adult education, providing one‑to‑one support for adult learners. From there, I trained as a counsellor and have since worked both face to face and, more recently, online. My practice includes supporting clients with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, carer stress, bereavement, neurodivergence and chronic illness.
I am also a mum of grown-up children and have personal experience of neurodivergence. My experiences have deepened my understanding of autism and ADHD and the challenges faced by neurodivergent people. This has shaped my flexible approach to therapy and commitment to adapting sessions around the needs of a client.
I also work as a counsellor supporting people with chronic illness. I have personal experience of chronic illness and the emotional challenges that come with adapting to changes in health. The grief that can occur is often unseen by society and many people struggle in silence. Having a space to talk about how we are feeling can help to process feelings and to find a way of moving forward.
I have qualifications in counselling and psychotherapy up to post graduate level and undertake continuous professional development to further develop my knowledge and skills. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and follow their ethical framework for good practice.
Practice description
People come to therapy for many different reasons. Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed by stress or anxiety or are struggling with a lack of confidence or low self-esteem. Maybe you have had a bereavement or are struggling to adjust to a health condition(s). Or maybe you wondering why you're feeling different or are adjusting to a late diagnosis of autism or ADHD.
Whatever brings you here, I offer a supportive space for you to explore what is going on for you. At the heart of my counselling approach is my belief that each individual is unique and I therefore use different therapeutic approaches to suit your needs. This includes cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), psychodynamic and person-centred approaches. I also use creative elements and am happy to share resources for those who would like further reading or tools for self-reflection.
Our work may focus on a specific challenge or take a longer journey of self-exploration. My role is to walk alongside you and to offer support and compassion as you explore your difficulties and begin to uncover what may lie beneath them. By becoming more self-aware you can discover strengths and inner resources that you may not be aware of. This can help rebuild self-esteem that can so often become diminished due to difficulties we encounter in life.
Whatever your goal is, I aim to work at your pace and to support you, whether short or long-term.
My first session
The first session is 50 minutes long and will involve me going through the counselling agreement which I will have emailed to you beforehand. The agreement sets out how we will work and covers confidentiality, sessions, how to pay etc.
The session is also an opportunity to discuss what you would like to get from therapy. I will ask questions to assess whether I have the right skills and experience to support you. If I feel I don’t, I can help signpost you to other services.
This is also a chance for you to see if I'm the right therapist for you. It can take a few sessions for the counselling relationship to develop but the first session can give you an idea of whether I am someone you are comfortable with and can trust. When you trust a counsellor you are more likely to explore your difficulties which can lead to greater opportunities for personal growth.
If we agree to continue working together, we will organise our next session. Ideally sessions are held weekly but I can accommodate sessions every two weeks. As counselling progresses and you start to feel stronger you may want sessions further apart. I am happy to accommodate that once the counselling relationship has established.
The fee for the assessment/introductory session and subsequent sessions is £50 payable in advance. However, I am committed to making therapy accessible and can offer reduced rates to those with limited finances. Please enquire if you are interested in this option.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me via the BACP. I will respond as soon as possible but please check your SPAM FOLDER should my reply have gone there.
Thankyou for reading my bio. I look forward to the possibility of meeting you.
