About me and my therapy practice
What is counselling? It's a way to make sense of our lives, our emotions, and our connections with the people around us. Sometimes there is a particular issue which would benefit from some reflection and space, but there is often an overwhelm from lots of different aspects which feel like that they are all piling up on you at once. Whichever of these apply to you, counselling can support and nurture you and provide you with the opportunity to have a closer look at what is happening in your world.
Practice description
I work a lot with anxiety, something that I have experienced on a personal level. Trying to explain anxiety to somebody that has never struggled with it is so hard. I try to provide a space where you will feel understood and listened to. My experiences will never be exactly the same as yours but I provide a space where you can feel comfortable exploring your anxiety with somebody who has a little idea about how that might feel for you.
I work with bereaved clients who are struggling with loss and we explore together the process of grief and all the emotions attached to losing someone. I also work with grief and loss that hasn't resulted from a bereavement, maybe the end of a relationship, loss of a job or career, caring for someone with a long term degenerative medical condition and how it feels to grieve for somebody while they are still with us.
I also work with people who are facing transitions in their life. This may be switching job, moving home, considering a career change or break, starting a new relationship or ending an old one, adjusting to being a parent or your children being grown and moving into their own adult lives. The list could go on and on, but counselling is a useful space to explore how you're feeling about the changes you are facing and perhaps working to establish coping strategies and mechanisms that you can use to enable you to move forward into whatever life holds for you next.
With young adults, I can offer you support with the transition from being a child to an adult and provide a space where you have control over your emotions and life decisions. I am not just another older adult telling you what your life should look like or how to move through it, but someone who listens and supports while you explore.
I am fully qualified, a member of professional bodies, abide by their ethical guidelines and continue to develop my work through supervision and ongoing training and all of these are detailed on this profile if you want to know more.
My first session
I can offer a 20 minute introductory phone call (or Teams if you prefer) so you can have a think about whether I am the person you want to work with. It is so important that you find the right counsellor for you. I can also answer any questions you may have.
Following that, if you decide to go ahead, sessions will be 50 minutes in length - a "therapeutic hour". During the initial session, I will run through my contract with you and conduct an assessment to gather information and find out a bit more about what you might be hoping to focus on or gain from therapy.
