About me and my therapy practice

I am a humanistic counsellor and my training is based on Transactional Analysis. Have you ever walked away from a conversation wondering, "Why did I react that way?" or felt trapped in the exact same argument with a partner, colleague, or family member over and over again? Transactional Analysis (TA) is a warm, down-to-earth form of talking therapy designed to help you make sense of how you communicate, how you relate to others, and why you hit the same emotional roadblocks. Instead of using confusing psychological jargon, TA looks closely at your everyday interactions (or "transactions") to uncover the hidden patterns that drive your behaviour.

There are many approaches to therapy and I love to find the help that is suited to the individual rather than "one size fits all". Therefore I will also use ideas and resources from other approaches such CBT, ACT, Gestalt, mindfulness (and more) where appropriate.

Practice description

I am Naomi Best, a BACP-registered counsellor offering a collaborative and down-to-earth therapeutic space for clients aged 18 and over. Based in Winchester and Portsmouth, I provide flexible face-to-face, online, and walk-and-talk therapy.

I am experienced in both short-term and extended therapy. You may have a clear idea of how many sessions you would like and together we can plan what you would like to use the time for.

If you are not sure how many sessions you want, don't worry. We will have regular open discussions about how you feel it is going.

I start by arranging a chat on the phone. If that feels good for both of us, the next step is an initial session.

Primarily, I am here to listen to you. Through listening and understanding, my job is to help you find your own meaning, solutions or awareness to whatever you are going through.

My first session

In our first session, I will be asking some questions to help me get to know you and to capture some needed information for my records. I will also cover the terms of my working contract which is my commitment to work with you professionally and ethically, and your commitment to me to abide by the requirements of regular attendance, payment and appropriate contact. After that, the time is yours to talk about what has brought you to counselling.
