About me and my therapy practice
You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure why things feel as difficult as they do. At times, it can feel like different parts of you are pulling in different directions - one part wanting things to change, another feeling unsure or unable to move forward.
I’m Nolan Richardson, a Cardiff-based counsellor and psychotherapist. I offer a space where you can talk openly and begin to make sense of what’s going on, at your own pace but not on your own.
I regularly work with concerns including:
• Anxiety and difficulty switching off your mind
• Self-esteem and feeling not quite good enough
• Relationship difficulties
• Grief and loss
• Life transitions and questions around identity
• Emotional experiences that feel confusing or in conflict
• Neurodiversity, both for those who identify as neurodivergent and those exploring this
I also welcome and affirm people from LGBTQI+ communities.
I value working with people from different cultural, ethnic, religious, and national backgrounds. I recognise that culture, faith, migration, language, family, and community can all shape how we experience ourselves and the world, and I approach each person with openness and respect.
Practice description
My approach is relational and collaborative. I pay attention to what happens within the therapeutic relationship as well as your wider life experiences, recognising that our relationships, histories, and ways of coping can shape how we experience ourselves and others.
In my work, I often understand emotional difficulty as involving different parts of us, each with their own feelings, needs, and ways of coping. You might recognise a part of you that feels overwhelmed, another that is self-critical, or one that is trying to protect you. Therapy can be a space to get to know these experiences with more understanding, rather than feeling dominated by them or needing to push them away.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms or quick solutions, I aim to help you develop a clearer understanding of your experiences and what may sit beneath the difficulties you are facing.
I aim to offer a space that feels open, engaged, and real, while staying focused on your experience and what you need from therapy.
My first session
I offer a free 15-minute phone or video call to help you decide whether working together feels right.
Our first full session is a chance to begin understanding what has brought you to therapy. There’s no expectation to have everything worked out or to explain things in a particular way. We’ll go at a pace that feels manageable and start to build a sense of what might be helpful for you.
Sessions are available in person, online, or by phone.
