About me and my therapy practice
For women who are kind to everyone but themselves.
Maybe you’re the one who holds everything together. Capable, thoughtful, there for everyone, and privately much harder on yourself than anyone realises.
Perhaps there’s a voice that tells you you’re not doing enough, or not doing it right. Perhaps part of you wants something to change while another part keeps you exactly where you are. You might find it hard to say no, to ask for what you need, or even to know what you need.
You may already understand a lot about why you are the way you are. But understanding it hasn’t changed how it feels.
I’m James, a BACP Registered counsellor working online across the UK. I mainly work with women who struggle with self-criticism, shame, people-pleasing and feeling pulled between different parts of themselves, although anyone is welcome to get in touch. _____________________________________________
How I Can Help
I regularly work with:
* A harsh inner critic and constant self-judgement
* Perfectionism and never feeling “enough”
* People-pleasing, guilt and difficulty with boundaries
* Feeling torn: part of you wants one thing, part of you another
* Anxiety and overthinking
* Low self-esteem and shame
* Relationship patterns that keep repeating
* Losing touch with who you are or what you want
* Low mood and feeling disconnected from yourself
You don’t need a diagnosis or the right words. Noticing that something needs to change is enough to begin.
Practice description
My Approach
Everything starts with our relationship. My work is person-centred at heart: you set the pace, nothing is pushed, and you won’t be analysed or judged. I aim to offer a space where you don’t have to perform, impress or look after anyone else.
Within that relationship, I draw on a few ways of working:
- Parts work (informed by Transactional Analysis and IFS): getting curious about the different parts of you, such as the critic, the people-pleaser and the part that’s simply tired, and understanding them rather than fighting them. Often the harshest parts are trying to protect you.
- Compassion-focused therapy: building a warmer, steadier way of relating to yourself, especially when things go wrong.
- ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): loosening the grip of difficult thoughts and feelings, so you can move towards what matters to you.
This isn’t a fixed programme. Some sessions we’ll simply talk; in others we might try something more experiential, but only if and when it feels right to you. I’m not directive, but I am engaged and honest, and I’ll gently challenge when it feels helpful. _____________________________________________
About Me
I’m particularly interested in the stories people carry about who they are, and how those stories quietly shape the way they treat themselves. Before training as a counsellor I spent twenty years in corporate and IT roles. I hold a Level 5 CPCAB Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling and have four years’ combined experience across Mind, Shout and private practice.
Some women wonder whether they’d feel comfortable working with a male counsellor. That’s a completely reasonable question, and you’re welcome to talk it through on our introductory call.
My first session
Our first session is a chance to get to know each other. I’ll listen to what’s brought you to counselling, and together we’ll start to explore what you’d like to get from our work. It’s just as much about you getting a sense of how comfortable and heard you feel with me. You don’t need to have anything worked out beforehand, and you only share what you’re ready to share.
Sessions are online by video on Monday to Thursday evenings, weekly or fortnightly, at £50 for 50 minutes.
Is This the Right Fit?
I may not be the best fit if you’re mainly looking for career coaching or work-focused support. If you’re in crisis and need immediate help, please contact your GP, NHS 111 (option 2 for mental health) or Samaritans on 116 123.
Taking the First Step
Reaching out can feel hard, especially if you’re used to managing everything on your own. I offer a free, no-obligation introductory call where you can tell me a little about what’s bringing you to counselling, ask any questions, and see whether we’d work well together.
