About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Lynsey Burns, a counsellor based in Morningside, Edinburgh offering in-person and online therapy. As a pluralistic therapist, I provide a warm, non-judgmental space for people experiencing anxiety, loss, identity struggles, life transitions, and relationship challenges. Whether you're looking for short-term or long-term therapy, we can work together at your pace to explore what matters most to you.
I am a registered member of the BACP and hold an MSc in Counselling (Distinction) from Abertay University. Alongside my private practice, I work with clients at PF Counselling in Edinburgh on a voluntary basis. Before training as a counsellor, I studied English Literature and worked as a radio documentary producer. These experiences deeply shaped my approach to therapy. Literature gave me an appreciation for the power of personal stories, while radio allowed me to listen, really listen, to people from all walks of life. These perspectives naturally align with my counselling approach, where we explore, reflect, and reshape the stories you tell about yourself.
"When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write the ending." (Brené Brown)
As an adoptee, therapy helped me make sense of my own identity and experiences, which led me to further research into adoption-informed counselling. I have a particular interest in the theme of identity - how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how our experiences shape our sense of self. These questions often arise in therapy, whether in the context of adoption, life transitions, or personal growth, and I approach them with curiosity, care, and a belief in each person’s capacity for self-discovery.
Practice description
Life can be complex, and we all experience moments when things feel overwhelming or uncertain. As a pluralistic counsellor, I believe in working together to find the approach that best suits you. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all—every individual is unique, and our work together will reflect that. My approach is trauma-informed, identity-affirming, and culturally sensitive, ensuring that you feel heard, supported, and valued.
I work with clients facing a range of challenges, including:
- Life transitions and major changes
- Loss and bereavement
- Relationships, including adoption-related issues
- Identity and self-esteem
- Freedom, choice, and finding direction
- Anxiety and depression
- Neurodivergence and navigating the world in your own way
- The impact of past experiences, including childhood adversity
Therapy can be short-term or long-term, depending on what you need. Some people come for a few sessions to work through something specific, while others want longer-term support. However long we work together, I believe your therapy should feel useful and meaningful. That’s why I'll regularly check in to make sure we’re focusing on what matters most to you and addressing your counselling goals.
My first session
I know that finding the right counsellor is an important step, and it’s natural to want to see if we’re a good fit before committing. That’s why I offer a free 30-minute introductory session online - a chance for us to meet, talk about what’s bringing you to counselling, and see whether what I offer feels right for you. There’s no pressure or obligation, just an opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of how we might work together. If that sounds helpful, I’d love to hear from you.
