About me and my therapy practice
I am a humanistic counsellor providing client focussed sessions, primarily working with clients with general anxiety, depression, relationship issues, low self-esteem, childhood trauma and autism.
I aim to establish a trusting and understanding relationship with encouraging my clients to feel safe, comfortable, accepted and held in deep regard. Within this confidential space, my clients are encouraged to explore what has bought them to counselling. The approach I use is individual to each of my clients, following their own individual journey, at their pace.
Depending on my client's needs and preferences, we can use interactive material such as videos, work sheets and mind maps. Often a timeline of the client's life can be useful. I often use psychological theories in my work, such as Transactional Analysis and Attachment Theory to enhance my client's understanding of their life and self.
This journey will hopefully help clients gain a better understanding of who they are and what they want from life, and with this self-awareness there can be a greater appreciation of how to move forward. I work with my clients helping them to obtain growth through counselling.
Before becoming a counsellor, I spent 35 years working in a corporate environment in the UK and US real estate industries, having originally qualified as a chartered surveyor. Together with my husband, I have raised three children who are now adults.
Practice description
I work with adults in person, online or on the telephone, in 50-minute sessions, usually on Microsoft Teams. Normally the sessions are weekly, however sometimes meeting are every other week.
I hope to provide cost-effective counselling with reasonable rates of £45 per session; however, I can discuss concessionary rates if this is unaffordable. I hope to encourage people to embark on counselling even when faced with financial challenges, as everyone deserves a sense of wellbeing.
My first session
Initially, my client and I would speak on the telephone so that we can both gain a general overview and establish broadly if we are a "good match". I would get a general sense of what the client is looking for, and whether I'm best suited to provide appropriate therapy.
Following this, our first meeting is an assessment session and is free of charge. This gives both of us the opportunity to meet, understand the client's issues, and to consider if it "feels right”.
At the second session we would discuss the contract, setting out the structure and creating a sense of clarity. As a counsellor I want the client to be informed and comfortable about the process.
I believe the type of counselling I offer is usually most beneficial when the client embarks upon medium to long term counselling.
