Availability

I work on Monday mornings, Tuesday evenings, Thursdays and Saturday mornings in Dalkeith. I have limited availability for low cost sessions at the Fisherrow Centre in Musselburgh on Tuesday afternoons.

About me and my therapy practice

I'm Sylvia, a psychodynamic counsellor and social worker. Originally from Caithness, beside the shores of the Pentland Firth, I am now based in Midlothian, at the foot of the Pentland Hills.

I have many years' experience of supporting people through life's challenges, including those from diverse backgrounds. I am passionate about building meaningful therapuetic relationships to support personal growth.

I am a late-diagnosed neurodivergent adult and mother of neurodivergent children. I have a particular interest in the intersection of trauma and neurodiversity, and recognise that being neurodivergent increases a person's likelihood of experiencing trauma.

Practice description

Feeling stuck? Let’s work together towards your new life…

Have you have lost your sense of purpose, are you running on empty? Maybe you’re so used to taking care of everyone around you that you’ve forgotten what it is that you need. You’re exhausted from holding things together for everyone else. Counselling can help you to understand where this started, and make changes to improve connections with your family and friends. Perhaps you are struggling with relationships, often choosing the same kind of partner and repeating arguments you’ve had before. I can help you to think about why this happens and think about what you want from your current and future relationships.

I work in a psychodynamic way, which means that we look at past experiences to discover and understand why things might be feeling difficult just now. This helps you to feel free to move forward by making choices that match with what you really want and need.

With 15 years’ experience in social work, I understand how difficult it can be when our family lives are complicated. It is incredibly brave to be the one who chooses to do things differently to our parents and grandparents, but it can also be a hard and lonely. I can support you through this. My background means I really do understand where the systems set up to support families don’t always work, and I can offer you a place to be heard and understood without judgement.

As a parent of neurodivergent children and a late diagnosed adult, I know how difficult it can be to raise children who may not confirm to the expectations of our families, friends and others. I know how hard it is when this brings up our own feelings of feeling different or excluded. I can help you to feel more secure about your parenting and have confidence in how you support your family.

The past chapters of your life are not the whole story. I would love to be alongside you for the next step.

My first session

I offer a free 15 minute call for us discuss what has led you to seek counselling, give me the chance to tell you a little about how I work and give you the chance to ask any questions. This means you can make a decision about whether or not you would like us to work together.
