About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Lucy and I am an integrative counsellor working with teens, young adults and adults, in-person in Didcot, Oxfordshire, and online across the UK.

I have extensive experience working in pastoral and counselling roles in schools, including state and private schools and an alternative provision in Oxford. I also for Wiltshire Mind, where I counselled young people and adults, both online and in-person.

In addition to my qualifying diploma, I have further qualifications in Counselling Children and Young People and in Trauma-Focused Counselling.

I work creatively to facilitate communication and expression. I might use games, art or music to help clients tell their story and convey their challenges, goals and emotions.

I also use psychoeducation, including handouts and worksheets, to increase understanding of your difficulties. Examples of this might be when working with anxiety and panic attacks; an insight into the biology of what’s happening can be validating and offer ways of managing, while keeping your individual experience at the front and centre of our work.

My practice is neuro-affirming. I have undertaken additional professional training on effective counselling practice in relation to adults and young people with autism and ADHD. If you are exploring your own possible neurodivergence or have been recently diagnosed and are reflecting on what that means for you, I hope you will feel supported and accepted with me.

Practice description

I am an integrative counsellor, drawing on theories and practices from a handful of approaches to ensure that our work is tailored to you, your needs and your goals.

My core approach to counselling is person-centred talking therapy. I hold the values of non-judgement, empathy and unconditional positive regard at the centre of our work, always.

And while person-centred counselling focuses on what’s happening in the present, other theories look further back into the past to understand what driving your emotional responses. This can enable a deeper understanding of self and the roots of your current difficulties. In particular, I often work with a focus on attachment and relationships to understand how your early experiences of emotional safety might be playing out for you now.

I also use cognitive behavioural techniques (CBT) to help facilitate changes in patterns of thinking and behaving, when appropriate.

I am a trauma-informed practitioner, trained to work cognitively and somatically to support you in a way that feels safe and containing. Work is always appropriately paced, with you in control of what you share and when.

My practice is based in comfortable, private rooms in a community centre. It is walking distance from the local bus routes and train station and is within easy reach of local schools and shops. There is ample free parking onsite.

My first session

I offer an introductory call with no cost and no obligation. The purpose is to for you to tell me a bit more about what’s been going on for you and what you are hoping for, and to ask me any questions. Then, you can decide whether you feel we could be a good fit to work together.

In your first session, I will complete a brief assessment, which helps us to highlight areas to focus on and gives us a baseline to check on your progress. This can be a quick exercise but many clients use the questions to give me more detailed information and we might take more than one session to complete it. In can be a helpful way to get things started.
