About me and my therapy practice
I offer therapy for adults affected by abuse, coercion and social upheaval, including people navigating difficult relationships, harmful experiences and challenging social or political circumstances.
You may be trying to make sense of an abusive or controlling relationship, experiences of exploitation or mistreatment, or events that have unsettled your understanding of yourself, others or the world around you. You may be struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, relationship difficulties, or feelings of uncertainty and disconnection.
I have particular experience and interest in domestic abuse, sexual violence, coercive control and exploitation, as well as experiences of powerlessness or mistreatment within workplaces and institutions. My wider background in research, journalism and theory also informs my interest in the personal effects of political conflict, social change and upheaval.
You do not need to identify with a particular diagnosis or understand your experiences as trauma or abuse to seek counselling. We can begin with whatever feels most important to you.
Alongside my counselling practice, I have worked in domestic abuse services and undertaken research into exploitation at the University of Nottingham. I hold a PhD in Political Theory and have taught at Loughborough University and Birkbeck, University of London. My earlier work as a journalist covering political conflict and social upheaval in the Middle East also informs my understanding of the wider circumstances in which people's lives unfold.
The use of the title Dr in this directory listing relates to the member’s doctorate qualification. However, this does not imply a general medical qualification.
Practice description
I am a BACP-registered counsellor, originally trained in integrative counselling at Derby University, and am currently undertaking further training in existential-analytic and person-centred psychotherapy at SAFPAC. My approach is exploratory and relational, with an emphasis on understanding your experiences in your own terms, rather than applying a predetermined explanation or assuming there is one right way to respond.
I aim to understand your experiences as you live and make sense of them, rather than interpreting them through a predetermined framework or assuming there is one right way to respond.
I am interested in how people understand themselves and their relationships, and how their lives are shaped by the circumstances in which they find themselves. Emotional distress does not always arise in isolation, and our relationships, environments and experiences of power can affect how we see ourselves and what feels possible.
I aim to offer a thoughtful, supportive space in which we can explore your experiences with openness and curiosity, without judgement or pressure to reach particular conclusions.I currently work with adults, primarily online. I can also offer home visits in the local area where appropriate. Home visits are charged at a higher rate to reflect the additional time and travel involved.
Sessions are confidential and usually take place weekly.
My fees are flexible according to individual circumstances, with online sessions available from £40.
My first session
Our first session is an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions you may have and get a sense of how I work. You do not need to prepare anything or have a clear account of your experiences. We can begin wherever feels comfortable.
I offer confidential online counselling for adults, with sessions usually taking place weekly. My fees are flexible according to individual circumstances, with sessions available from £40.
