About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Christel and I'm an Integrative Counsellor working here at Thatcham Counselling Service. Integrative really just means I draw from all the varying schools of thought behind therapy, from the origins with Freud to more modern approaches such as the Person Centred movement.

Seeking help is a courageous first step and crossing the threshold of the therapy room can be daunting. It’s important to know that this is your room and your experience. We’ll start out looking at the day to day difficulties you’re experiencing and look to find the root cause. We can then look for strategies to manage the day to day, or work deeper to resolve any “unfinished business” from the past. That is always your choice.

I hold a level 4 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling from MCTA in Wantage, Oxfordshire. I also engage in constant professional development in other areas such as addiction, autism, self-harm and domestic abuse.

I have worked for the last 5 years as a Wellbeing Practitioner for the charity Mind, helping those with complex and enduring Mental Health issues.

I have worked also as a Counsellor for the charity CGL, supporting those on their journey to sobriety with issues around attachment, grief and loss.

Practice description

I’m there to support, offer insight and witness to your challenges whatever they may be. By saying out loud what’s on your mind in a non judgemental space with someone you trust you can see things from a clearer perspective and move forward from any “stuckness” you may be experiencing. Looking at ourselves, our thoughts, feelings and behaviours, with curiosity rather than judgement, can be transformative.

I can help in the following areas:

Acute anxiety

Depression

Addiction

Neurodivergent challenges

Life stage transitions

Peri-menopause and Menopause

Work stress

Family relationships

Grief & Loss

Self seeking (answering the question “Who am I?)

About me and my therapy practice

Hi - I'm Christel, a therapist working online and in person, in the Basingstoke area. Making the decision to go into therapy can be difficult and drawn out. People seeking therapy may be finding life difficult, or have lower levels of energy than usual, which is why I aim to make your introduction to therapy as easy as possible. If you're having issues with family or relationships, living with anxiety or depression or facing ND challenges I may be the right therapist for you.

How can therapy help?

The term "talking cure" was coined by Freud and all these years later still the best way to understand what counselling is in its most basic form.

If you're struggling to understand your thoughts, feelings or behaviours, or that of those around you, talking to a therapist and exploring and examining these things together can help. Even wider world events can effect how we're feeling and having somewhere to talk about this can alleviate your fears.

Many feel like they don't want to burden or worry those around them and talking openly and honestly to somebody impartial and unconnected to their day to day lives is transformative.

Some things can be very difficult to disclose and building a trusting relationship with someone who is non-judgemental can facilitate catharsis, self acceptance, understanding and healing.

If you're stuck thinking about the past or worrying about the future, we can break that cycle together.

Practice description

Who, When & Where?

I work with anyone over the age of 18.

I work primarily online (using Zoom platform) but also have a room up near the hospital in Basingstoke if you prefer meeting face to face. Unfortunately these premises are not wheelchair accessible.

I offer a free introductory online session of 30 minutes so you can see if I'm the right therapist for you (which can be booked through the contact section on my website) and to make sure I can offer what you need. After this if you choose to proceed we'll meet once weekly for a 50 minute sessions until you decide you are ready to end. We can then taper off with bi-weekly sessions or end altogether when ready.

My first session

In your free introductory session we'll go through a brief assessment to look at what has brought you to counselling right now, any history of past difficulties and what you hope to achieve during our work together. This will be very different to future counselling sessions which will be contracted between us and much more in depth, more slowly paced and less directive.

You can book your first session online by visiting my website - www.cvvcounselling.com.
