About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Janet and I welcome you and respect your courage in seeking support.

My desire to become a person centred therapist has been motivated by my personal experience of living with a chronic illness in my 30’s and 40’s, and coping with significant losses along the way.

My own counselling journey has given me a real sense of purpose and drive to support others facing real challenges. Let’s be honest, simply being human can be hard work and it takes courage to unpack those parts of us that hurt the most.

I specialise in working with issues related to loss or anticipated loss. Loss may be felt due to a bereavement, with a painful grief being held within. Loss may be due to the breakdown of a relationship, health, identity, job, home, time, dreams, aspirations, regret, spirituality or life transition…

The layers of loss are part of what it is to be human and they are often triggered by unique life events. People often underestimate the burden of carrying loss and its impact on their physical and mental health.

You may be asking yourself: What does loss mean to me? How do I cope with my loss? Why do I feel stuck? How can I move forward? Is there a potential loss somewhere that is stopping me from living my best life?

My person-centred approach aims to give you a safe space with compassion, non-judgement, respect and genuine kindness where you can freely explore your losses at your own pace and hopefully answer some of these questions.

Fully insured, fully qualified with up to date DBS checks.

Qualifications:

FdSc degree (distinction) in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Warwickshire College University Centre).

Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies, Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (Warwickshire College Group).

Bachelor Honours Degree of Economic and Social Studies in Psychology and Sociology (University of Swansea, Wales).

Practice description

I believe the most important element of therapy is to build an honest, trusting relationship that is genuinely collaborative.

Together, with a gentle curiosity, we can explore those parts of your world that are challenging. You are the expert in your world and if you feel something isn't quite 'right' then it probably isn't.

I aim to provide you with the autonomy that encourages feelings of empowerment and choice. This means not telling you what to do or trying to fix, but allowing you to find the tools within you that provide personal growth and resilience.

My work respectfully responds to difference - you are unique. You may prefer a slower pace to think and reflect. You may want to explore unhelpful patterns of behaviour that are impacting on your thinking, feelings and causing you increased levels of stress, depression or anxiety.

If a client finds it of benefit, I can draw upon elements of cognitive, somatic and psychodynamic therapies or integrate psychoeducation into the session if and when appropriate.

Working at a leading national bereavement charity, I have ongoing specialist training. I support clients experiencing grief, loss, bereavement after suicide, trauma and the complex issues arising from experiencing grief.

I believe that your ongoing feedback is welcome and important, as it allows the sessions to respond to your individual and changing needs - identifying what works and what doesn't work for you.

Clients often say that they feel a sense of relief from speaking without fear, being really heard and properly acknowledged. Often, in your daily life this is simply not possible, as you may feel scared, ashamed or guilty with burdening your loved ones.

Whatever you're going through, I'm here to listen and support you at your own pace.

You are not alone.

My first session

I understand that it can be difficult to choose a counsellor as well as it being a financial commitment.

With this in mind, I offer an initial, free, no obligation assessment session on the phone or online (Teams) for about 15/20 minutes. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions and discuss what has brought you to therapy, and what you would like to get out of it (your expectations).

Once we have agreed to work together, I will email you a copy of the contract for you to read through and sign. In order to keep you safe, as a minimum this includes client details, medical information and emergency contacts.

All data is kept securely, in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

What I can help with

Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Body/somatic therapy, Child related issues, Chronic fatigue syndrome / ME, Cultural issues, Depression, Disability, Health related issues, Loss, Menopause, Men's issues, Neurodiversity, Personal development, Post-traumatic stress, Relationships, Self esteem, Sensory impairment, Spirituality, Stress, Trauma, Women's issues, Work related issues
