About me and my therapy practice
Hello, and welcome to my page. If you are facing difficulties in life, I hope to be of therapeutic support and intervention. I am attentive to each person's unique experience of the world, including anxieties, frustrations, senses of loss, isolation, being misunderstood, unhappy, or searching for something more. Through an empathic and analytical approach, I accompany people undergoing various challenges such as inner states, couple communication, the processing of the past, or the bewilderment of an alien present. My aim is to provide a space and a relationship to explore your ongoing experiences and to arrive at new realisations and ways of being. I work with people of diverse cultural, geographical, and social class backgrounds, with different identities and sexualities, either one-to-one or in relational counselling.
I have experience across different therapeutic settings (NHS Talking Therapies, Relate, Thrive Together Psychotherapy, Cassel Associates). My approach is theoretically 'integrative' whereby I draw upon different theories including humanistic, existential, psychodynamic, and CBT, any of which may prove of insight. My therapeutic work is informed by an extensive background of research and university teaching in the field of anthropology: the cross-cultural study of what it is be a human being within society. I am attentive to how people’s lives are shaped by family, culture, psychology, and society, and to the difficulties that people face in love, work, life, and death.
I work part-time at the Centre for Anthropology and Mental Health Research in Action at SOAS, University of London, and at the University of Oxford, where I teach courses such as ‘What makes life meaningful? Perspectives from anthropology’. I hold a PhD for a thesis, 'Aspirations of university graduates: an ethnography in New York and Los Angeles'.
Practice description
One-to-one
Working one-to-one, we explore, process, and seek to overcome whatever struggles you are experiencing, however subtle or strong, singular or multiple. These issues might have names or not, including anxiety, depression, life transitions, traumatic symptoms, or questions around identity, intimacy, and belonging. I have particular experience working with young men in their twenties, thirties and forties with a focus ranging from self-worth to sexuality to relationships to life purpose. I seek to provide an ongoing therapeutic space to explore existential questions connecting the everyday with bigger philosophical issues. Without idealising suffering, I believe that leaning into life's challenges thoughtfully can create opportunities for introspection, growth, and the realisation of potential.
Relational counselling
I hold a Diploma in Relational Counselling, with Distinction. This joint therapeutic approach allows for people to explore issues in their relationships in a sensitive way, setting a standard for what can be sustained outside of the therapy context. I help people in partnership to address such issues as recurring conflict, incidences of infidelity, discrepant sexual desires, divergences in parenting or attitudes towards in-laws, cultural differences, a life change, or a connection fading in its spark.
I will facilitate deep and sometimes difficult conversations, often addressing topics that may be awkward to explore in ordinary life. Relational therapy can be akin to joint therapy, sharing inner lives and biographies in the presence of one another. Through this joint emotional processing, people in partnership continue to learn about themselves and each other, thus building on the intimacy of a relationship.
In some cases, it may be better for people's long-term lives to make the difficult and painful decision to move apart. I can provide a safe space to work through such questions, and how such a route might be considered or else avoided.
My first session
I offer a free initial 20-minute phone call.
In relational counselling, this is a separate call with each person.
We then proceed to an initial session.
I typically work open-ended and weekly. I can also build in reviews at periodic blocks or work to a particular number of sessions.
What I can help with
Abuse, Anxiety, Bereavement, Cultural issues, Depression, Identity issues, LGBTQ+ counselling, Loss, Men's issues, Narcissism, Post-traumatic stress, Relationships, Self esteem, Sex-related issues, Sexual identity, Sexuality, Trauma, Vegan allied, Work related issues
