About me and my therapy practice
I'm a counsellor and Adlerian psychotherapist with adults in-person in west Wales. I'm here to listen with an open heart and mind. I'm here to help you find out how you've got stuck and how you can move forward in your life. I aim to be a safe space for you, even if you never really feel safe at the moment.
My specialist areas: trauma, sexual and domestic violence, bereavement, relationship and family conflict, anxiety and depression.
I also work online with people further afield.
Practice description
I use different approaches because people are different.
In all sessions, my aim is to create a space you can be yourself and speak freely without fear of judgement. I want you to be seen and heard without shame.
Sometimes, we explore your childhood to understand what’s happening now and how you might change. This is a way for you to understand yourself and your behavior proactively.
Sometimes, we practice body-based exercises to manage your sensations and feelings - this is a way for you to tolerate uncomfortable or distressing feelings with insight.
I'm also a Somatic trauma-therapist and trauma educator. I've been supporting people impacted by sexual violence, domestic abuse, displacement and vicarious trauma for 10 years and am passionate about creating trauma-informed spaces and practices. I've worked for The Trauma Centre, MIND Aberystwyth, Barbados Child-traffickers, Pathway Counselling and County of Sanctuary Pembrokshire.
I was part of the Core Team whilst Mental Health Counsellor at Pathway Counselling 2023-25. There I led an innovatice body-based Trauma-Toolkit program for groups introducing practical coping skills for understanding the impact of trauma.
I'm certified and fully-insured as a counsellor by the BACP and a member of ASIIP. I'm a TCTSY-F facilitator certified at the The Trauma Centre, where Dr Bessel Van der Kolk researched and authored 'The Body keeps the Score'.
My first session
Our first session is informal. It's a chance to see if I'm the right fit for you. I'll be keen to hear about any concerns you have about therapy, so bring any questions or worries you may have about counselling and let me know. There are no silly questions!
I'll ask you why you're here and what you'd like to get out of therapy. Sometimes, people set goals at this stage but sometimes we don't know what we want or why we're here - that's fine.
We might look at your family and health history.
You'll be asked to sign an Agreement which established the safety and confidentiality arrangement between us. That paperwork can be sent via email to save time or printed-off for you in advance. Email Meriel if you'd like your Agreement and paperwork before the first session.
