About me and my therapy practice

Hello! My name is Becky, I am a qualified counsellor/therapist in Rayleigh with a bachelors degree in counselling.

Life is almost never easy and straight forward, it follows a natural flow of easier times and trickier times in which we need more support. Sometimes these more difficult times can drag on and we start to feel they’ll never end. We can become trapped in patterns that feel impossible to break. However, I believe that everyone has a wealth of wisdom and experience that they have gathered throughout their life. Sometimes it just takes a little support, kindness and an empathetic ear to untangle and apply this wisdom to the difficulties we are facing. Because of this, I always work in a collaborative way, meaning that you are the centre of our tailored work together. I offer my knowledge and experience for you to decide what will be helpful in your unique situation and together we plan a way forward.

I also believe that growth and healing cannot be achieved without having someone genuinely listen to you, try to understand your experience and accept your thoughts and feelings as they are. Therefore, the therapeutic relationship is central to my practice.

To me, therapy is about having a better understanding of how we are feeling and why we behave in certain ways, understanding these allows us to choose a different path to the one that is causing difficulty. This creates deeper connections and fuller lives.

I have experience working with a range of difficulties including grief, bereavement, depression, anxiety, anger, family and relational troubles, low self esteem, sexual trauma, and childhood trauma.

I feel it is important that you take the lead in your therapy, because of this I won’t tell you what to do but instead encourage you to explore your strengths, deeper feelings and choices about your future. I work at your pace but am also willing to gently ask about thoughts or feelings you might be avoiding, as this is where real awareness and change occurs.

Practice description

I offer a calm, safe and confidential space for you to explore whatever is troubling you at your pace. I am an integrative counsellor which means I am trained in a various range of therapeutic modalities. This allows me to draw from different models and ways of working that will best suit you, your needs and your goals. Sometimes this may mean I am curious about your thoughts and feeling to help uncover deeper emotions, other times it may mean us designing ways to test out your upsetting beliefs to reduce their impact. However I work, it will always be rooted in compassion and free from judgement.

I have first hand experience of how overwhelming, uncomfortable and daunting it can be to reach out or even start looking for a therapist. Because of this I always try to make you feel as comfortable as possible. The space I try to create is one in which you feel understood, accepted and able to voice your thoughts and opinions freely without fear of judgement.

My first session

Before our first session I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation which allows us to get to know each other. It allows me to determine if I am able to help with the difficulties you are facing, and it allows you a chance to see if you might feel comfortable working with me.

If you decide to go ahead with sessions, I offer weekly or biweekly sessions lasting 1 therapeutic hour (50 minutes). In the first session we will discuss a contract which highlights what you can expect from therapy, then, I may ask some details about what brings you to therapy and a brief history. Following session may be less structured depending on what you are comfortable with and what you feel will work best for you.
