About me and my therapy practice
If you have ever felt like everyone else received a life manual that you somehow missed, you are not alone. You might know the quiet exhaustion of putting everyone else first, masking to meet impossible expectations, or carrying anxiety, burnout, and shame entirely on your own.
I’m Alex Wilson (he/him), an integrative, relational counsellor. My practice, Makepeace Therapy, offers an inclusive, non-pathologising space for adults seeking grounded, shame-free therapy.
I work extensively with LGBTQ+, GSRD (Gender, Sexuality, and Relationship Diversity), and neurodivergent adults (including ADHD, autism, and AuDHD, whether formally diagnosed, self-identified, or questioning). Alongside my private practice, I work as a counsellor with Birmingham LGBT, providing dedicated therapeutic support around identity, mental health, and sexual health.
My ‘insider’ perspective as a queer, late-diagnosed AuDHD practitioner means we begin from a shared foundation of mutual respect and safety. You will never have to spend your therapy sessions defending, justifying, or educating me about your identity or how your brain works. Your lived experience is believed and valued without question.
I also warmly welcome adults from all backgrounds who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or exhausted by life and are looking for a genuine, collaborative therapeutic relationship.
Whether you are navigating a late diagnosis, autistic burnout, executive dysfunction, minority stress, relationship changes, or early life patterns, we will work at a pace that feels safe, sustainable, and entirely tailored to you.
You are welcome to reach out via email or send a brief message on WhatsApp (07522 113712) to discuss slot availability or arrange a free 15-minute intro call to see if we are a good fit for therapy.
Practice description
My practice is rooted in the understanding that mental health struggles are rarely personal failures; they are often understandable responses to our environments, societal pressures, culture, and survival adaptations.
Being an integrative therapist, I adapt our work to your specific needs rather than forcing you into a rigid model:
- Person-Centred: You are the expert on your own life. I offer an empathetic, non-judgmental container where you decide the direction and pace.
- Psychodynamic: We can gently explore how your past experiences, early relational bonds, and childhood environments unconsciously shape how you feel and relate today.
- Transactional Analysis (TA): We examine the patterns and "scripts" you may find yourself stuck in—such as chronic people-pleasing, over-functioning, or masking—and find ways to rewrite them.
- Somatic Awareness: I support you in noticing how stress, trauma, and masking are held physically in the body.
A Neuro-Affirming, Low-Demand Environment:
Therapy should adapt to you, not the other way around. Whether meeting in person or online, my sessions are designed to be sensory-friendly and low-demand. You are always welcome to stim, use fidget tools, look away, change seating positions, or take pauses whenever needed.
My first session
Starting therapy may feel overwhelming, especially if you have had unhelpful past experiences or are managing burnout. To help you decide whether we are a good fit without any pressure, I offer a free 15-minute phone or video consultation.
This call is brief, informal, and pressure-free. We will touch lightly on what brings you to therapy, you can ask any questions about how I work, and we can check that our schedules align. Cameras are always optional, and you don’t need to prepare anything in advance. You can reach out by email or send a quick WhatsApp message to get this scheduled.
Your First Full Session:
If we decide to work together, our first 50-minute session (£50) is designed to be gentle, collaborative, and unhurried.
We will briefly cover practicalities and confidentiality, and then explore what feels most pressing for you right now. You wont be put on the spot, forced to dive straight into painful memories, or expected to have a neat script of your problems.
We can discuss any adjustments that make the space comfortable for you—such as lighting preferences, breaks, moving around, or communication adjustments.
At the end of the session, we review how the conversation felt. There is never an obligation to book ongoing sessions on the spot; therapy is a relational choice, and it is vital that you feel safe and comfortable in my presence.
