About me and my therapy practice

Welcome to Daisy Change Counselling.

My name is Gemma Barnfather and I currently work with both children and adults. I work in a Person-Centred capacity and this is about me offering you the core conditions to grow, flourish and make positive changes to your life and wellbeing. I create a non-judgmental space for you to be your true authentic self and for us to create and maintain a good rapport. I am very down to earth, grounded in my approach and open minded.

I am extremely passionate about mental health and I have worked in high intense supporting roles all of my working life. My careers have varied from Framework, a homeless shelter; volunteering as a Counsellor at Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid and I spent 20 plus years in a primary school setting. I am dedicated to being a part of the solution to mental health and wellbeing. I am able to relate to the daily struggles that our wellbeing can have on our development, in all areas of our lives. Working in alliance, to empower and encourage clients to flourish, within themselves for long- and short-term goals. I volunteered much of my time to a charity that specialises working with survivors of sexual abuse and incest. In my spare time, I enjoy having family fun with my 3 children aged 19, 17 and 13 years old and I do love a dog walk.

Practice description

Working with adults

I'm able to build beneficial relationships with adults to create a trustworthy working alliance and good rapport. All of my experiences have enabled me to work with an array of presenting issues. I've worked and been accepting of all different backgrounds, cultures, religions, genders, sexualities, additional needs, and neurodiversity. Creating safe, non-judgemental environments for clients to feel acknowledged, heard and be their authentic selves to make space for self-exploration and self-awareness. Allowing clients to realign again. I work collaboratively to generate feelings of understanding, being heard, valued, and empowerment.

I'm committed to providing effective, therapeutic counselling that supports both children and adults to overcome their challenges and lead more fulfilling lives.

While I am able to work on past experiences, that are influencing present times, I'm invested to offer the core conditions of the Person-Centred Therapy, that promotes positive changes in the present also.

Working with children and young people

I worked in a primary school setting for 20+ years. I've been a significant part of the early intervention and support to children to build those foundational skills needed to be more resilient, confident, and emotionally aware - empowering them to be able to better deal with their struggles.

My flexible approach allows young people to build their own emotional toolbox, to navigate through those tougher times in their lives. Working with the child’s capacity, enables them to be their own self, promoting an ethical and creative space for them to be honest and open.

I'm experienced working with the traumas our young people face in their family dynamics, relationships, educational settings, their social lives, digital presences, and day to day lives. I'm aware of the toll that these have on their wellbeing.

Being a part of a solution for our children's mental wellbeing, is what I am passionate about.

My first session

Our first point of contact will be for us to organise a free introductory phone call to ensure that we are the right fit. This is so important in counselling. On the call, I will arrange a way to send you the documentation:

Parent/carer information - what to expect from counselling.

Parent/carer consent and agreement.

Working Agreement - for adults.

Further Information - This will have details of how to find me, payment information etc.

I will have copies of these for us to complete, on the first session.

Our first full session will consist of me completing an assessment, and collecting a few details from you, to ensure that I have the relevant information in an emergency and that our work together is safe, that you are safe.

While it is important for us to make time at the start of the first session for me to dot the i's and cross the t's, I will strive to ensure that much pf this is completed prior the first session so that we can start work, should you wish to proceed.
