About me and my therapy practice
Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a GP for over 35 years, with a particular focus on palliative care, dementia, older adults, and supporting people living with chronic or life-limiting illness. This work gave me a deep understanding of how closely our physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing are connected, and how healing often requires attending to the whole person.
After moving to the UK from South Africa, training as a counsellor felt like a natural continuation of my work in the caring professions. I now bring together decades of combined experience to offer a counselling relationship grounded in compassion, curiosity and respect.
I am a person-centred pluralistic therapist. At the heart of my practice is the belief that, when offered a safe, trusting and non-judgemental space, people often find their own way towards clarity, healing and change. I do not assume there is one right way to work; each person’s experiences, needs and goals are unique. Therapy is therefore collaborative. I bring my training and experience, and you bring your expertise in your own life. Together, we find an approach that feels right for you.
To this end I offer creative approaches such as sand tray and writing for those where words may not feel enough.
I also work from a trauma-informed perspective, prioritising safety, autonomy and emotional regulation throughout the therapeutic process.
My experience includes working with grief, loss and major life transitions. Loss can take many forms: bereavement, illness, dementia, cancer, chronic pain, ageing, retirement, relocation, changing relationships, or becoming a carer. I also support healthcare professionals and others in caring roles who may be experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, moral injury, or questioning their identity and purpose within demanding systems.
Wherever you find yourself, therapy can offer space to make sense of what you are carrying.
Practice description
I work with adults from 18 upwards, facing a wide range of difficulties, including:
- Grief and bereavement
- Cancer
- Chronic or life limiting illnesses
- Cancer, dementia
- Chronic pain.
- End-of-life care,
- The emotional impact of aging, challenges facing older clients.
- Support for carers and families.
- Medical professional burnout
- Life transitions and adjustments - menopause, retirement, parenting, work stresses
- Relocation and immigration, cultural disconnection
At times words may be out of reach or just to hard to express and using creative and symbolic therapies may offer an alternate way to access these words and emotions. I offer sand tray therapy and other creative methods as part of our work together.
I am available for in-person, online and phone sessions, making therapy accessible to suit your needs. I try, when possible, to offer flexibility. House calls are available on discussion
My first session
I offer a free 20-minute phone or video call for us to see if we would like to work together.
Therapy is a challenging and highly personal journey, and it is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist.
In our first session, we may explore what has brought you to therapy, and what you hope to gain. This doesn't mean you must have a clear idea or answer to these questions, sometimes it’s simply a feeling, or a deep sense that something needs to change.
Within this space nothing is right or wrong, it is yours to use as you need to. This session will be about getting a sense of how we can work together, and whether you feel I am the right person for you to work with.
While there may be some basic information that may be needed for our mutual safety and safeguarding, I will never push for what you do not want to give. If we feel we may not be the right fit, I will always attempt to help you as best I can.
