About me and my therapy practice

When life changes

Sometimes life changes in ways we weren't prepared for. Even when we thought we were.

I work with adults aged 18 and over, individually and as couples. You may be trying to find your footing again, or questioning yourself more than you used to. Am I overreacting? Why am I not coping better? Shouldn't I be fine by now? It can be exhausting when what you feel and what you think you should feel are two different things.

Sometimes you know what's knocked you off balance. Sometimes you don't. Anxiety can creep into parts of life that used to feel straightforward. Bereavement can change your world in ways that are hard to explain to other people.

For couples, something may have shifted between you. Perhaps you keep finding yourselves back in the same difficult place, despite trying to sort it out.

Particular areas of my work

Cancer and life after treatment is a particular interest of mine. So much attention can go into getting through treatment that afterwards can take you by surprise. Other people may think it's over. You may have expected to feel that way too.

I also work with surgical and treatment induced menopause. When it happens suddenly because of surgery or treatment, you're often dealing with the reason it happened at the same time. That's a lot to take in.

Burnout is another important part of my work. Before becoming a counsellor, I spent 25 years in investment banking and media. I know what demanding workplaces can be like, and how easy it is to keep going when you're used to being the person who copes.

Anxiety and bereavement are parts of my practice too. Sometimes there isn't a neat name for what brings you to counselling. Something has changed. You'd like to understand what.

Practice description

What counselling with me is like

You don't need to arrive with a perfectly formed explanation of what's wrong. Often we begin with what has been happening recently and see where the conversation takes us.

I listen carefully and I'll ask questions when something feels worth exploring. I'm not a therapist who sits in silence for most of the session, but neither will I fill every quiet moment. Sometimes people need time to find the words.

Mostly, we talk. If words aren't coming easily, I can also use sand tray and other creative ways of working. Some people find this surprisingly helpful; others would rather just talk, which is absolutely fine.

My work is trauma informed. I won't push you into talking about something before you're ready, and I'm mindful that difficult experiences can affect people in very different ways.

With couples, we look at what is happening between you. Often there are conversations that keep going wrong, or things you've stopped talking about altogether. The aim is to understand what is happening underneath that and begin talking to each other differently.

My practice

I see clients in person in East Sheen, and also work online and by telephone. Walk and talk sessions are available too. I offer mostly evening appointments, with some Saturday mornings.

I hold a BSc (Hons) in Person-Centred Pluralistic Counselling and am a registered member of the BACP. I have regular clinical supervision and continue to develop my practice through further training. At the moment, this includes specialist training in couples work. I've also trained in trauma informed counselling and hold a Professional Certificate in the Facilitation of Online and Telephone Counselling from the Metanoia Institute.

My first session

I offer a free 15 minute introductory call before you decide whether you'd like to book a session.

You can tell me a little about what's bringing you to counselling and ask me anything you'd like to know. There is no pressure to make a decision during the call.

If we decide to work together, our first full session gives us more time to talk about what's been happening. I may need to ask for some basic information, including anything that's important for your safety, but I won't expect you to talk about things you're not ready to share.

Some people arrive knowing exactly what they want help with. Others find it much harder to explain. That's okay. Part of our work can be understanding what's going on.

And if, after speaking, it seems that I'm not the right person for you, I'll be open about that. Where I can, I'll help you think about what other support might suit you better.
