About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Kawita. Maybe you don't know exactly what you're looking for from counselling. You might be feeling misunderstood, confused, isolated, stuck, and that something just isn't right. Or, maybe there is something specific on your mind.

Counselling and therapy can be useful for working on all kinds of difficulties. I have supported clients with many issues ranging from a general sense of being lost or personal development and identity issues, through to more specific issues such as depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, body dysmorphia, injuries, relationship difficulties and trauma. No matter your situation, I will work together with you to really understand the depth and meaning of what's going on in your life. No issue is too small.

I like to create a warm, curious, and empathetic space where you can feel enabled to openly explore and challenge some of your thoughts, feelings, and patterns you might fall into. Often these patterns relate to our past experiences which, although we've moved on in some ways, still exist as echoes in our current experiences. By becoming aware of and working with these echoes we can develop insight and more self-compassion to help you move forward.

Having worked abroad, and as a counsellor within NHS and charity settings in addition to private practice, I have enjoyed supporting a wide range people from all walks of life including with people from a variety of ages, cultures, sexualities, identities, and with different forms of neurodiversity, and this mixed with my own personal experiences of these areas has enabled me to work with these matters with sensitivity and insight and to take an interest in how the impact of our personal mix of culture and identity impact our relationships and mental wellbeing.

I believe that one of the most important things for our relationship is a collaborative approach where both of our thoughts are key, so I welcome your own insights rather than seeing myself as an all-knowing expert.

Practice description

Although my work is primarily based on psychodynamic and psychoanalytic ideas, I like to work flexibly and with an open mind rather than being rigid in my thinking. Through working in different settings and extra studies I have learned to draw from other therapeutic traditions such and Jungian, existential, integrative, attachment, and creative therapies, as well as drawing from my interests in eastern philosophies such as Buddhism, yoga, and Taoism. I encourage any form of creative expression that you enjoy and welcome you to bring it into our work if you wish to.

My first session

Once you've contacted me, I will arrange a 15-20 minute phone call. Here, we can start to talk through what's brought you to counselling and also get a feel for how we might work together. I welcome any questions you might have about how I work or about psychodynamic therapy more generally.

After this, in our first session we can talk in more detail about your reasons for coming to therapy and how your present and past experiences may be affecting you so that I can better understand how I can best be of help to you. After this our work will be more explorative, less structured by me and more guided by your material.

Most of all I would really encourage you to consider throughout this whole process whether you feel safe enough and willing to be open with me, as I believe this our therapeutic alliance one of the most vital things for you and our work together. It matters to me that you feel we are a good fit and that you are not being judged.
