About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m Amanda and my pronouns are she/her.

I am a qualified person-centered counsellor. This means my work is client led and can sometimes call for an integrated approach to meet with the client’s individual needs.

My approach is fundamentally about understanding the clients unique experience through their eyes by listening and walking alongside them in their counselling journey. The client will experience a genuine and judgement free therapeutic relationship which allows for the support and understanding of anything the client brings.

In addition to my private practice, I volunteer with a local charity providing free counselling services to the community where most of my work is with 12-18 year olds.

Practice description

I offer on-line and in-person sessions where the term is considered in a free pre-therapy telephone conversation. This helps the client to gain a sense of rapport and decide if they wish to start counselling with me.

In the summer months I also offer walking and gardening therapy.

I am committed to meeting the client’s needs to gain an understanding of their unique point of view. I feel the client’s sense of safety is the foundation to collaboratively achieving the best counselling experience and outcomes.

I have experience in supporting both children and adults with a range of symptoms and believe that all therapeutic relationships start with gaining an understanding of the clients experience, struggles and how developed coping mechanisms help manage day to day challenges.  These can manifest in unhealthy relationships with people, food and substance abuse.  Often reaching a point of overwhelm where anxiety, self harm and self medication become part of daily regulation.

I consider therapy in line with sensory integration to support dysregulation and teach clients, parents and carers how to integrate regulation as part of self-care and truly believe this approach enables all to understand and communicate their own needs and wants, which empowers the client to self-advocate.  This approach is diverse and inclusive in reaching clients with varying needs and supports a neurodiverse and LGBTQIA affirming service.

I can work creatively across all age ranges by integrating mediums that the client finds helpful such as art, music, sand play and sensory integration.

My first session

The free 30 minute pre-therapy telephone conversation is an important opportunity for clients to ask questions to help understand and alleviate fears & unknowns. It’s a good time to gage if working together feels right. If we decide to start counselling sessions a date and time for the first session will be agreed. The first session will be for agreeing on a working contract collaboratively and will include information on my privacy, safeguarding & regulatory policies to assure my commitment to ethics, values and putting the client first.

Moving forward sessions will cover matters brought by the client.
