About me and my therapy practice
My name is Dorothea. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).
I offer long-term, open-ended therapy, with the option to adapt session frequency over time as change begins to take root.
I work online via Zoom and also offer sessions by phone.
My approach is psychodynamic and relational. This means I pay attention not only to what you bring, but to how we relate to one another, as this can offer insight into patterns that may be shaping your experience elsewhere.
I work with the understanding that present-day difficulties are often connected to earlier relational experiences, as well as to the wider social and cultural contexts we live within. In our work, these layers are explored with care, curiosity, and attention to pace.
I aim to offer a space that can hold complexity, including ways of thinking, feeling, and processing that may not always fit easily into more structured or conventional approaches.
Therapy, for me, is not about fixing, but about developing a more secure and honest relationship with yourself, and from there, with others.
Practice description
My background as a mixed-race Black and European woman from a mixed-class upbringing informs how I understand the therapeutic space.
I am particularly interested in themes of belonging and exclusion, power and oppression, and domination and subjugation. These dynamics are not only external or societal, but are often internalised and replayed in relationships, including the relationship we have with ourselves.
Part of the work can involve noticing and making sense of these patterns as they emerge, and considering what other ways of relating might become possible.
Alongside my clinical work, I have an ongoing interest in embodiment, performance, and creativity as routes into emotional experience. Where appropriate, this may gently inform how we work together.
I have experience working with individuals in high-pressure corporate environments, including business owners, leaders, and professionals navigating complex demands and expectations.
Before training as a counsellor, I worked as a self-employed somatic yoga teacher in a one-to-one capacity, and have also spent much of my career in corporate settings. This continues to shape my understanding of both the body and the environments people are moving within.
My first session
I offer a complimentary 20-minute initial Zoom or phone call to get a sense of whether working together feels right. We can discuss the potential for the work, and you can ask me any questions that feel relevant.
In our first full session, we begin with where you are. You do not need to arrive with a clear narrative or defined goals.
I will be paying attention to both what is said and what is harder to say. There is no expectation to go beyond what feels manageable, but it is helpful to approach what may feel unfamiliar or difficult gently over time.
I intend to offer a space that feels safe, containing, and honest - where you can speak freely and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.
