About me and my therapy practice
I come to therapy with a life shaped by leadership, responsibility, and a deep respect for the complexity of human experience. Alongside my work as a psychotherapist, I have spent decades leading organisations in the voluntary sector across Scotland. I worked closely with issues of poverty, trauma, addiction, homelessness, and inequality. This dual perspective strongly informs my therapeutic practice.
My journey into psychotherapy was not a departure from leadership, but a deepening of it. Over time, I became increasingly interested in the inner lives of the people behind the roles, behaviours, and crises I encountered professionally. I wanted to understand not only what people do, but why they struggle, protect themselves, form attachments, withdraw, love, and grieve in the ways they do. Therapy offered a space where this understanding could be explored with care, depth, and respect.
I work relationally and integratively, drawing on psychodynamic and attachment-informed approaches. I have particular experience in working with loss, relationship breakdown, identity change, complex trauma, anxious attachment, and the erosion of self-worth that can follow prolonged stress or caring roles. I offer both individual therapy and couples work, supporting clients to understand long-standing patterns while remaining grounded in their present lives.
Clients often describe my approach as calm, grounded, and thoughtful. My leadership background brings a strong ethical framework, clear boundaries, and an emphasis on accountability, while my therapeutic training ensures the work remains compassionate, collaborative, and carefully paced. I do not rush people towards solutions. Instead, I support them to make sense of their experiences, reconnect with their emotional world, and develop more secure ways of relating to themselves and others.
Practice description
I offer a calm, reflective space for individuals and couples seeking support through emotional difficulty, relationship challenges, and periods of change. The practice is grounded in relational, psychodynamic, and attachment-informed approaches, with a strong emphasis on safety, ethical practice, and respect for each person’s lived experience.
I work with individuals and with two people together, including couples, who may be struggling with loss, relationship breakdown, communication difficulties, identity change, anxiety, depression, or the impact of complex or developmental trauma. Therapy provides an opportunity to explore both present concerns and the underlying patterns that shape how people relate to themselves and to others.
Individual therapy offers a confidential space to reflect, gain insight, and develop a stronger sense of self. Couples work focuses on understanding relational dynamics, attachment needs, and the ways past experiences influence current interactions. When working with two people together, the emphasis is on creating a balanced and contained environment where each voice can be heard and understood.
The practice values thoughtful pacing and collaboration rather than quick solutions. Clients are supported to make sense of their experiences, recognise emotional patterns, and develop more secure and compassionate ways of relating. Attention is given to boundaries, power, and difference, ensuring the work remains respectful and grounded.
my theraputic approach is shaped by a commitment to integrity, professionalism, and care. Therapy is approached as a shared process of curiosity and courage, where understanding develops over time and change emerges through reflection, relationship, and consistency.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, discuss what has brought you to therapy, and consider whether working together feels right for you. It is not a commitment to ongoing therapy, but a space to explore your needs, ask questions, and understand how therapy might help.
During the session, I will invite you to talk about your current concerns, any relevant personal or relational history, and what you hope to gain from therapy. Where appropriate, this may include exploring patterns in relationships, emotional responses, or past experiences that continue to have an impact in the present. There is no formal assessment or questionnaire to complete unless this feels helpful and is agreed in advance.
For couples or two people attending together, the first session focuses on understanding the relationship context, hearing from both individuals, and clarifying what each person hopes for from the work. Care is taken to ensure that the space feels balanced, respectful, and safe for everyone involved.
The first session is charged at the standard session rate and is the same length as ongoing sessions. I will also explain practical arrangements, including confidentiality, boundaries, and how we would work together if you decide to continue.
Clients often use this session to get a sense of my approach, pace, and style. My aim is to offer a calm, thoughtful, and containing environment in which you can decide whether this feels like the right therapeutic relationship for you.
