About me and my therapy practice

I’m Ryan Karter, a dual-trained integrative counsellor and coach, and founder of The Karter Consultancy (TKC) in Richmond, South West London.

I offer an integrative approach combining counselling, coaching and neuroscience-informed work for lasting personal change.

My style is grounded in an honest, respectful and collaborative working relationship. It is rooted in curiosity, being direct where appropriate, and working together to achieve the best possible outcome for you. I do not see therapy as something done to you, but as a shared process in which we make sense of what is going on, identify what may be keeping you stuck, and work towards meaningful change at a pace that feels manageable.

I draw on the Personal Consultancy model, an evidence-based framework that integrates reparative counselling with the generative momentum of coaching in a structured way. This allows us to work at depth where needed, while also focusing on practical shifts that support more sustainable change in everyday life. My work is also informed by neuroscience, combining emotional understanding with practical techniques that help new ways of thinking and feeling take root over time.

I welcome all adults, men and women, whether you are new to therapy or have tried it before and want a different approach. Areas I specialise in include:

  • Addiction
  • Men’s mental health
  • Midlife, ageing and mortality
  • Identity
  • Intrusive thoughts and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Dating and relationships
  • Recurring patterns of behaviour and thinking that feel hard to shift

Practice description

I work with people who want support with both the deeper and the more practical side of change. Some clients come because they are struggling with addiction, including alcohol, drugs, pornography, gambling, social media, sex and love, or eating-related compulsive patterns. Others come because they are living with anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, bereavement, life transitions, social anxiety or trauma-related difficulties. Some people may simply be feeling stuck, lost, overwhelmed or struggling to make sense of life.

I also work with men’s mental health and the pressures, expectations and challenges many men experience, including emotional isolation, shame, difficulty asking for help, and patterns of self-reliance that can make it harder to reach out. In addition, I work with clients in midlife who are reflecting on ageing, identity, mortality and what they want life to look like going forward.

My aim is to offer a purposeful, collaborative space where we can understand what is happening for you, explore what lies underneath it, and work towards change that lasts. Sessions are available in person in Richmond upon Thames, online via secure encrypted video meeting, and as walk-and-talk therapy in outdoor settings within the borough of Richmond. Whether we are working with repeated thoughts, behaviours, emotional patterns or life direction, I aim to help you move towards greater clarity, steadiness and choice.

My first session

I offer a free 15-minute initial consultation, either by telephone or online video meeting. This is an opportunity to understand which issues and areas you would like to address, and to ask any questions you may have about engaging in therapy.

Your first full session is charged at half-price: £40 for 50 minutes. This gives us a chance to further explore what brings you to therapy, what you would like help with, and whether we feel like a good fit to work together. There is no obligation to continue after this session.

As an alternative to the standard rate of £80, I also offer a Commitment Package of 12 sessions for £795, usually £960, for clients who want to commit to a longer piece of work.
