About me and my therapy practice
My goal as a therapist is to help you explore the emotional questions in your life so that you can understand, with greater clarity, why you feel like you do. My practice offers a non-judgemental and confidential setting where we can reflect on what has brought you to this point in your life, and consider your potential to live differently in the future.
In our sessions, I listen not only to your current concerns, but also to the past experiences, memories and relationships that shape them. Often, we can view the present through a lens of the past, and can end up stuck in emotional patterns which are no longer appropriate or helpful. By reflecting on how these patterns have formed, psychodynamic therapy can help you to identify which aspects of your life you would like to hold onto and which you would rather let go.
Before training as a therapist my background was in the arts and literature, and as a result I pay close attention to the narratives we construct and the disguises we assume to protect ourselves from pain. I am particularly interested in the conflict between our public and private selves, and the feelings of isolation and disconnection that can build as a result. My clinical experience includes working with people suffering from low self-esteem, depression, persistent anxiety, relationship problems and trauma, but I also understand that it can be difficult to put your finger on exactly what is wrong - this too is a valid place to start.
Practice description
I am a qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist working with adults who experience a wide range of personal and emotional challenges.
I prefer to work face-to-face as I believe that many of the nuances of communication are lost online. I offer both short-term or open ended therapy, depending on your requirements. Short-term therapy usually lasts eight to twelve sessions, and focuses on addressing specific issues or navigating particular life transitions. Open ended therapy takes a deeper approach, allowing time to work through more complex or deeply rooted concerns. We can discuss what might work best for you in our first session.
As well as the BACP, I am fully accredited by the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy) and the BPC (British Psychoanalytic Council), and I adhere to the highest ethical and clinical practice standards. I am also a professional member of the Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling (FPC), and a member of the London Therapy Network. I completed my advanced 5-year training in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the WPF and the British Psychotherapy Foundation, both leading training organisations with reputations for clinical excellence.
My first session
I appreciate that the process of finding a therapist can be difficult, and it’s completely normal to feel hesitant. The best place to start is to arrange a free fifteen minute phone call, where we can discuss what you need. I welcome enquiries, and am ready to help you decide whether psychotherapy could work for you.
Having spoken on the phone, the next step would be to book in a face-to-face consultation. This would give us the chance to get to know each a little, and get a feel for whether we might work well together. If you feel you would like to carry on working with me, then we can arrange a regular appointment.
Research consistently shows that the most significant factor in therapeutic success is the relationship between you and your therapist. Finding someone that you can trust is crucial if you are to feel safe enough to be honest - and honesty is at the heart of meaningful change.
