About me and my therapy practice

I’m Dona, a psychodynamic counsellor and psychotherapist with over 20 years’ experience in senior NHS roles across maternity care and perinatal mental health.

I have a particular interest in working with mothers, birthing people and perinatal professionals through pregnancy, birth, fertility, loss and parenthood. I also work with people experiencing anxiety, relationship difficulties, life changes or questions about who they are.

My approach is warm, thoughtful and curious. I won’t tell you who you are or what you should do. I offer a confidential, non-judgemental space where we can explore what has shaped you, make sense of what is weighing on you now and find some relief.

As a psychodynamic therapist, I’m interested in how our early relationships and ways of coping can continue to shape how we feel about ourselves and relate to others.

I also recognise that we don’t live in isolation. Family, culture, heritage, gender, relationships, and the wider social and cultural world around us can all shape how we see ourselves, where we feel we belong, and which parts of ourselves feel easier to show.

Understanding the past isn’t about staying there. It’s about becoming curious about what it might help us understand about the present, and opening up more freedom and choice.

Practice description

I offer online psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy for adults.

Over the years, I’ve worked alongside people through some of life’s most vulnerable and life-changing experiences. I understand that sometimes what brings you to therapy is clear, and other times you may simply feel that something doesn’t feel quite right.

My specialist experience includes maternal and perinatal mental health, pregnancy and parenthood, fertility difficulties, difficult or traumatic birth experiences, pregnancy and baby loss, and supporting professionals working in maternity and perinatal care.

I also welcome people struggling with anxiety, relationship difficulties, life transitions, questions of belonging or a sense that somewhere along the way they’ve lost touch with themselves.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want from therapy before you begin. We can start with what is happening for you now and see where the work takes us.

My first session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and you don’t need to have everything worked out before you contact me.

If you’d like to explore working together, you’re welcome to email or phone me to arrange a free 20-minute consultation. It’s a chance to tell me a little about what’s on your mind, ask any questions you have and get a sense of whether working together feels right.

If you decide to continue, our first session is a starting point. I’ll ask a little about you, your background, what has brought you to therapy and what you’re hoping for. There’s no pressure to tell me everything at once.

You might leave feeling relieved, uncertain, tender, hopeful, or perhaps something entirely different. There is no right way to feel.

We’ll build the work gradually, at a pace that feels manageable for you.
