About me and my therapy practice

Shame & Identity | Relationships | Men's Mental Health | Addiction Recovery

I have experience of working in a range of settings including third sector mental health services, addiction treatment centres and out in nature in my own practice, with issues including anxiety, depression and bereavement . I am down-to-earth, friendly, and relatable so that you can feel relaxed and safe enough to share your problems, without fear of judgement. I have lived experience of addiction recovery and adult ADHD, and practice in an open and relaxed manner.

With a particular interest in supporting people to move beyond core experiences of shame, self doubt and identity, my role is simple -to help you be who you want to be.

About me and my therapy practice

Have you ever felt that you’re not normal? That you’re uniquely, fundamentally broken? That you’re sick, weak, ill or beyond hope? Too sensitive? Too needy? Too much? That despite constant effort, life just never seems to get going, satisfaction escapes you and you can’t help but feel that somehow you were just not made for this world...

And yet, you have a sense that somewhere out there there is something more, some other way of doing things, of being in the world, if only you could just find it.

Perhaps you’ve been looking for this for a long time. Or perhaps you’ve reached a point where you’re saying: enough is enough.

If so, know that you’re not alone. And know too, that there is hope.

I’m Adam, a humanistic counsellor offering counselling and nature-based therapy in Kings Heath and south Birmingham. I work with adults who are depressed, stuck, disconnected, or weighed down by life’s pressures, carrying shame, regret, or a sense of being out of step with the world.

Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, reflective, and emotionally aware, yet exhausted by overthinking, self-criticism, or patterns that feel impossible to change. Some have tried other therapies or techniques, only to find themselves stuck in the same cycles.

My work isn’t about fixing you, changing who you are, or offering quick solutions. It’s about creating a space where difficult feelings — shame, grief, fear, or frustration — can be felt, understood, and worked with in a grounded, human way.

Practice description

As well as offering sessions indoors and online I also offer nature-based therapy in Highbury Park, where nature itself becomes an integral part of the work.

There is a growing body of evidence that therapeutic interventions in the natural world can help with a range of issues. I have particular interest and experience in working with:

  • Shame and identity
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • ADHD
  • Addiction
  • Emotional Disconnection
  • Relationship Difficulties

Being outdoors helps create a space where connection becomes more possible and more keenly felt: with yourself, with others, and with the world around you. This environment provides a gentle container in which we can explore your patterns, behaviours, and emotional experiences more deeply.

Most of the work will be through open dialogue, but where appropriate we may also use movement, breath, body awareness, or creative exercises to support insight and self-understanding. If working outdoors there are times where we will consciously bring in the natural surroundings to support reflection, at others it will find it's way into the work more organically.

Qualifications and Experience:

I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and have undertaken additional training in nature therapy, trauma, safeguarding, and working with neurodiversity.

I have worked in a variety of settings, including the NHS, third sector organisations, and private practice, supporting people with depression, anxiety, ADHD, addiction, identity struggles, and complex relational or familial issues.

I also have lived experience of mental health struggles, addiction, and neurodiversity. I have worked through these challenges with extensive personal therapy and lifestyle choices. I consider these experiences as important as my professional training in supporting my clients effectively.

My first session

I am only too aware of how daunting it can feel when searching for a counsellor or psychotherapist, which is why my first session is free of charge. I believe that having the chance to see whether we click through a lived experience without additional financial pressure is really important.
