About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Carl, an integrative person-centred therapist working with individuals aged 16 and over, couples and families. I offer space to make sense of your experience, reconnect with yourself and explore choices that fit your life. You do not need a clear explanation of what is wrong before getting in touch.
I work with anxiety, stress, burnout, low mood, grief, self-worth, attachment and relationship difficulties, including the emotional impact of ADHD and autism. For some men, expectations to cope alone can make reaching out difficult. Uncertainty, sadness, anger and vulnerability are welcome here. We can consider your relationships and wider circumstances as well as your personal responses.
Couples form a substantial part of my practice. I welcome people of all genders and sexual orientations, including monogamous and consensually non-monogamous relationships. We can explore recurring conflict, disconnection, trust, communication, ADHD's impact and decisions about your future, including separation and co-parenting. I make room for each person's perspective without taking sides or assuming one right outcome.
My qualifications include a Counselling Practitioner Diploma in Integrative Counselling, certification in couples and relationship therapy, ACT practitioner certification with the Association for Psychological Therapies, and a Level 5 Diploma in Positive Psychology Practice (Coaching). I am a Registered Member of BACP. Coaching is a separate service for practical goals and change.
Practice description
Our starting point is what life feels like for you. I listen without judging and work at your pace. You can explore difficult experiences, question expectations placed on you or begin with whatever feels hardest today. You remain the expert on your own life.
My person-centred foundation is informed by attachment, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and relational work. We can explore patterns learned earlier in life, how they serve or restrict you now, and what matters to you. Where useful, we may try mindfulness, practical tools or manageable experiments, by agreement. There is no expectation to think positively or push feelings away.
In relationship work, we look at the pattern between you and what each person needs. You can also attend alone about relationship difficulties. We consider whether joint sessions are appropriate and sufficiently safe, and review the work together.
I offer ADHD-informed counselling and exploration, rather than a formal diagnosis. My UK Adult ADHD Network Diagnosis and Assessment training helps me understand what specialist assessors explore. We can consider lifelong experiences, overwhelm, masking, self-criticism, relationships, or feelings about a diagnosis, and discuss whether a specialist assessment might be helpful. Exploration does not establish or rule out ADHD or other conditions.
I also support parents of teenagers aged 11 to 18, through four- or six-session programmes or session-by-session work shaped around the family's needs.
My continuing training includes ACT for ADHD, Emotion Regulation Therapy, EFIT with the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, and bereavement work with Cruse. We adapt the work to your needs, strengths and circumstances, without promising a particular outcome.
My first session
I offer a free, no-obligation introductory conversation: 20 minutes by telephone for individual counselling, or 30 minutes online for couples, parenting support and coaching. It is a chance to say what brings you here, ask questions and get a feel for whether working together seems right. There is no obligation to continue.
In our first full session, we make space for your experience, what you hope for and what you would like me to understand. You do not need all the answers or have to share more than feels manageable. If you attend as a couple, each person has time to speak, and we consider the relationship pattern and what you each want from the work.
We discuss confidentiality and its limits, our therapeutic agreement, session length, fees, frequency and rescheduling. You can ask about anything that feels unclear. When working as a couple, each person completes their own agreement. A questionnaire may occasionally help us explore an area in more detail; it supports conversation and is not a diagnosis.
You can manage appointments and request changes through My Sessions on my website. The agreed session rate is held for the lifetime of the current engagement; any different service or session length is discussed and agreed first.
To begin, use Email me on this listing or visit https://carlargent.co.uk to book an introductory conversation. A few lines about what brings you here and whether you prefer in-person or online sessions are enough.
