About me and my therapy practice

My style is collaborative, compassionate, and conversational. I offer a safe and supportive space where we can explore thoughts and feelings. As an integrative therapist, I draw on different therapeutic models to respond to what you need at different times. My core training is in psychodynamic psychotherapy, which means we will explore how unconscious processes and past experiences may be shaping your present. Depending on your needs, I may also use cognitive–behavioural approaches and psychoeducation to support the changes you wish to make.

Psychotherapy with me is more than simply looking inward. Together, we explore your inner world — your feelings, thoughts, and memories — as well as the relational patterns and life pressures that shape your present. Being from another culture myself, I bring cultural awareness and sensitivity to systemic issues, and I work through an anti-oppressive lens. This means we will also notice how wider systems — such as inequality, discrimination, or social pressures — might be affecting your wellbeing, recognising that sometimes the problem is bigger than any one person. This perspective shapes my clinical focus.

I understand that sometimes words are not enough — or not available — to express what you are feeling. Language barriers, cultural differences, or the sheer complexity of experience can make talking difficult. This is where art can be helpful: it offers another way to communicate and reflect, even when finding the right words feels hard.

I draw on both art psychotherapy and talking therapy so that together we can explore what feels right for you in the moment. Sessions may look different from week to week: we might talk things through, use image-making to express feelings, or simply take time to pause and reflect. You do not need to be “good at art”; beginners are welcome. This is a space where you can explore your experiences safely, with curiosity and without judgement.

Practice description

I am Sarah, a BAAT- and HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist with nine years’ experience working therapeutically with children and adults, individually and in groups, across Higher Education, the NHS, and the third sector in the UK. My current private practice is focused on working with adults and is informed by my earlier work with children, young people, and families.

My path into psychotherapy began over 15 years ago, rooted in a longstanding interest in understanding people and their inner worlds. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, a Certificate in Hospital Play, and an MSc in Art Psychotherapy.

I currently offer online sessions, with in-person sessions in Edinburgh coming soon. Please note that, due to my role as a Counsellor at the University of Edinburgh, I am unable to offer private therapy to individuals who are currently matriculated students at the University of Edinburgh.

I work with clients from all walks of life and have a particular clinical interest in supporting young adults from multicultural and international backgrounds. This includes Third Culture Kids (TCKs), expats, repats, international students, and individuals in intercultural relationships — particularly those navigating identity, belonging, transition, and the experience of living between worlds. My own cross-cultural background informs my culturally sensitive and reflective approach to therapy.
