About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I’m Josey! I’m a psychotherapeutic counsellor working with children and young people, and I have a particular passion for working with teenagers.
I remember how hard those years can be, and I’ve seen first-hand, both in my own life and in placements, how much a teenager can open up when they’re actually given the room to be themselves. That’s part of why I don’t rely on “just talking” as the only way in. If sitting across from an adult and discussing feelings sounds like the last thing your teen wants to do, that’s completely normal.
I bring in creative and activity-based approaches so the conversation can happen alongside whatever we’re doing, creating a comfortable and less intimidating environment.
I don’t work to a single fixed method. Every young person is different, so my approach adapts to what actually works for the person in front of me. If you’re a parent, I know it can be hard to know whether counselling is the right step, or whether your teen will engage with it at all, so I’m happy to talk that through with you first.
And if you’re the one who’d be coming to sessions: you won’t be talked at, and you don’t have to have all the right words ready before you walk in.
Get in touch with any questions you might have, reaching out is the first step
Practice description
Sessions are 50 minutes and usually take place weekly at the Lamp House in Jesmond. The space is set up to feel relaxed rather than clinical, with creative materials and activities to hand, so there’s always something to do with your hands if talking feels like too much. Some sessions will be mostly conversation, some mostly activity, and many will be a mix. There’s no pressure either way, and your young person sets the pace.
My first session
Before booking anything, I offer a free phone call to talk through what’s been happening and what you’re hoping counselling might help with. There’s no obligation, and it’s a chance to ask questions and see whether I feel like the right fit.
If you’d like to go ahead, we’ll start with an intake session. For children and teens, I meet with the young person and a parent or carer together, so everyone has the chance to say what they’re hoping for and ask anything they want to. If your teen is over 16 and would rather come on their own, that’s absolutely fine.
Everything else is covered in this first session, so there are no long forms to fill in beforehand and no separate assessment appointment. We’ll talk through how I work, what to expect, and confidentiality, and agree together how to move forward.
I also offer a student discount for university students, so please mention it when you get in touch
