About me and my therapy practice

Hi I'm Ben and I'm a person-centred counsellor that offers outdoor sessions in natural, green spaces. My goal is to provide a warm, safe and non-judgmental space for you to have the freedom to explore.

I see you as a unique individual and the sessions will reflect that, there's never any pressure to go at a certain speed or work in a particular way. You are the focal point of the sessions and I will try my best to facilitate the sessions to best meet your needs.

Building a strong relationship and connection is of upmost importance to me, it's the foundation of any therapeutic work. I pride myself on being a genuine person with my clients and I believe that being able to experience a 'real' person goes a long way to forming that relationship.

Alongside working as a counsellor I work as a tutor teaching young people and adults in a 1-2-1 environment. Helping others has always been a strong driving force for me as a person as is the primary motivation for my work as a tutor and a counsellor. My role as an educator also influences my therapeutic work: it's important for me to educate and inform clients so that they get the most out of the process.

Having gone through my own personal journey with my own neurodivergence I have a particular interest in working with neurodivergent clients. I understand what it's like to feel different and the impact that can have.

Practice description

Outdoor Therapy

Being outside, in nature can be both calming and invigorating. It can help give different and new perspectives on how we are feeling. Outdoor therapy or Ecotherapy involves all the great aspects of working indoors in traditional settings but with benefits you can only experience being outdoors. It allows use to move rather than being static which can make certain processes easier. It also brings nature where you might find useful metaphors for how you're feeling. It's up to you how strongly you lean into the outdoor aspects. For some people just being able to walk and talk is enough, whereas others may want to use nature in a sensory and creative way.

Working outdoors won’t be for everyone, ask yourself how do you feel when you’re outside in nature?

I’ve always loved being outdoors, I find that not only am I happier but also work better in a natural environment. Practicing outdoors brings out the best version of me as a practitioner and if you have a strong connection to the outdoors it may be good for your process.

Person-Centered Therapy

I'm a person-centred counsellor and that's very much at the heart of my personal philosophy. I'm not here to direct you or give advice my role is a supporting and empowering one. I try my best to equalise the power in the relationship and make the process collaborative.

My Sessions

My sessions take place outdoors and in nature rather than a room. The spaces that I like to use are:

  • Cromwell Bottom in Elland/brighouse
  • North Dean Woods in Greetland/Copley
  • Greenhead Park in Huddersfield.
I’m happy to work in other places if it’s suitable.

My sessions are either 1 hour £45 or 1.5 hours £65

My first session

I offer a free 20 minute consultation on zoom or by phone prior to any sessions taking place. In this we can discuss your needs and the suitability of outdoor counselling. It will also give you the opportunity to ask me any questions you may have and get a feel of how I work and whether I'd be someone you'd want to work with.

I'm also aware that going straight into working in natural spaces may seem intimidating to some people. If you do feel apprehensive what I suggest is starting off in Greenhead park as it's easily accessible and is a comfortable, safe space whilst still being green and having nature within it.
