About me and my therapy practice

My way of working is integrative and relational, which means I draw on different therapeutic approaches depending on you, what you bring and what seems most useful in the work.

At the heart of my practice is the belief that therapy works through a genuine, trusting relationship. I aim to offer a space where you can speak openly and be met with warmth, curiosity and honesty. I am not a therapist who simply sits back and says very little, nor do I work from a rigid programme or set of exercises. Therapy with me tends to be conversational, collaborative and responsive to what is happening between us.

We might explore patterns in your relationships, how earlier experiences continue to shape the way you see yourself and others, or the different parts of you that can sometimes seem to pull in opposite directions. I may notice patterns, ask questions, offer a different perspective or gently challenge something when I think it could be useful. At other times, what is needed may simply be the space to stay with something difficult and understand it more fully.

Practice description

I am a kind, caring and compassionate person. I understand that life can be tough sometimes and that it isn't always easy to see a clear path through. I want to be able to offer you some help and support through these times and help to uncover a way forward.

My work is influenced particularly by person-centred and relational therapy, Transactional Analysis and gestalt ways of thinking. In practice, however, I try not to make therapy feel overly theoretical or clinical. I am more interested in understanding your experience with you and finding a way of working that feels meaningful, human and useful. I believe that the relationship we build is important to effective therapy.

I see therapy as somewhere we can make sense of what has happened, understand what may be happening now, and gradually create more freedom in how you respond to yourself, other people and the situations you find yourself in.

I work on an open-ended basis and a unique model of counselling to you. I do not apply a one size fits all model, instead, the way I work will be tailored to your needs.

My first session

Our first session together will be a way for me to understand your needs, hopes, and expectations for counselling. I will ask a series of questions, not all of which may feel relevant to you at first, but they are designed to help me understand the full picture of what is going on for you and to gather your expectations of what you need from me.

We will discuss what your life looks like currently, a little about your background and upbringing, and what brings you to counselling at this point in your life. It is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you may have, to share anything you feel is important, and for you to see if you feel I am the right fit for you.

It is important that you feel you can begin to form a relationship with me, and the first session is a good opportunity to gently test this out in a supportive, unpressured way.
