About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I’m Paul. Before training as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I spent 25 years building businesses and working in senior leadership roles. I know the world of ambition, achievement and responsibility from the inside — and I’ve also experienced the value of having someone outside that world help me think more clearly about the questions that matter.
That experience was part of what led me to psychotherapy. I became increasingly interested in what sits beneath the decisions we make, the patterns we repeat and the expectations we place on ourselves. I believe that having a safe space to talk creates the opportunity to heal and grow. Sometimes this may mean exploring what is happening in your life now; at other times, looking at how experiences from the past continue to affect the present.
I now combine my professional experience with my clinical training and practice, working with people who are trying to make sense of change, achievement, loss and what they want from the next stage of their lives.
People have more of the answers than they think. My role is to listen carefully, ask a different question and help you find new perspectives.
Practice description
Life can be difficult to navigate. Counselling offers the opportunity to step back and give yourself time to think and focus on what matters to you.
I provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what is happening for you. We can explore what you are experiencing in the present, while also considering whether experiences from the past may be influencing how you think, feel or respond today. The work is guided by what feels important to you, with questions and different perspectives helping you develop a clearer understanding of yourself and your situation.
Counselling can help you make sense of difficult experiences, understand your thoughts and feelings, and see situations from a different perspective. It can provide space to consider choices and what may be holding you back. You may be dealing with difficult relationships, pressure at work, significant change or loss, or simply questioning where you are and where you are going.
You don't need to have a clear diagnosis or know exactly what's wrong to come to counselling. We can start with what's happening for you now and work from there.
Counselling isn't about being given the answers. It can help you find a clearer understanding of yourself and discover what will help you move forward.
My first session
Starting counselling can feel daunting, particularly if you have not had therapy before. You don't need to prepare anything or arrive knowing exactly what you want to say.
The first session is an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling, what is happening in your life and what you would like to be different. We can take some time to understand your situation and begin to think about what might be helpful.
I'll explain how I work, including confidentiality and the practical arrangements for our sessions, and there will be plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions or raise any concerns.
Most importantly, the first session is also a chance for us to see what it is like to talk together. Finding someone you feel comfortable with is an important part of counselling, so there is no expectation that you have to decide immediately whether you want to continue.
You may find that simply having the space to talk openly and be listened to is useful in itself. From there, we can work together to decide what you would like to explore and how counselling might help you move forward.
