About me and my therapy practice
Have you spent years being the person who copes, carries responsibility and keeps going, while what is happening inside is far less visible. My approach begins by understanding you as a whole person: what is happening now, what you have experienced, what may have shaped you and what you want from the life ahead.
I believe greater self-awareness can change the way we experience ourselves and the choices available to us. Together, we can become curious about what sits beneath the surface: beliefs you may have developed about yourself, emotional rules you learned to live by, recurring patterns, self-criticism and responses that have become automatic. We can also explore how stress and past experiences may continue to show up emotionally, physically and through the nervous system.
I don't expect you to fit one therapeutic model. My training spans counselling and psychotherapy, including person-centred, psychodynamic, CBT and ACT, allowing our work to develop around you. Sometimes you may need space to slow down, speak openly and process something you've carried for years. At other times, it may help to challenge an established belief, question unhelpful self-talk, look through a different lens or find a practical way of responding differently.
I listen deeply, remain curious, notice patterns and make connections. I'll also challenge you when I believe it could help us move beyond the surface. By connecting the dots between past and present, thoughts and feelings, relationships and experiences, we can better understand what may be driving the way you respond today.
Our work can move between deeper exploration and practical change. We can consider what you think, feel, believe and value, while developing healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.
The aim isn't to turn you into somebody else. It's to help you understand yourself more deeply, become more conscious of what you want to keep and what you're ready to change, and create choices that feel genuinely your own.
Practice description
People come to therapy for many different reasons. You may be living with anxiety, stress, burnout, depression or low mood, caught in overthinking, worry or negative self-talk, or struggling with confidence, self-esteem, self-worth or self-belief. You may experience panic, perfectionism, fear of failure or rejection, feel lonely, emotionally exhausted, stuck or overwhelmed, even when life appears successful or settled from the outside.
Relationships are a significant part of my practice. I work with individuals, couples and families around communication, trust, boundaries, people-pleasing, approval-seeking, conflict, disconnection, affairs and betrayal, separation or divorce, and recurring relationship patterns. Sometimes the relationship that needs attention is the one you have with yourself.
Past experiences can also continue to influence the present. Therapy can offer space to explore trauma, abuse, difficult childhood experiences, rejection, loss or experiences you've carried privately for years, and to understand how they may still be affecting your emotions, relationships and sense of self.
For many people, the difficulty isn't one clear problem. You may have reached a crossroads after years of working, achieving, caring for others or carrying responsibility. Retirement, children becoming independent, changes in relationships, redundancy or a shift in career can leave you questioning who you are now and what comes next. We can explore identity, direction, purpose, meaning, fulfilment and work-life balance as well as the immediate difficulty that brought you here.
I offer counselling and psychotherapy in person in Skipton and online across the UK. Alongside our sessions, I create personalised insights, reflections and home practices from our work together. These help you stay engaged with the process, deepen your understanding and self-awareness, and begin applying what we're exploring to everyday life.
My first session
Reaching out can feel like a big step, particularly if you've spent years managing things yourself or have never experienced therapy before. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what is wrong, what to say or where to begin.
Before booking a full session, I offer a free telephone or Zoom consultation. It's an opportunity to tell me what has brought you here, ask questions and get a sense of how I work. Just as importantly, it gives you space to decide whether I feel like the right therapist for you. There's no pressure to continue.
If we decide to work together, the first session begins with you. Some people need space to talk and let the conversation unfold. Others arrive with something specific they want to understand or change and prefer to begin there. I may ask questions to help us build a fuller picture, but there is no assessment you need to pass and no expectation that you tell me everything at once.
As our understanding develops, so can the way we work. We might process something difficult, notice a recurring pattern, explore a relationship or past experience, question a belief, or focus on what you need to do differently now. I want the work to remain relevant and purposeful, rather than follow a set programme.
Our work also continues beyond the room. I create personalised reflections, insights and home practices from what we explore together, giving you something to notice, consider or practise in your own life. This helps turn what we discover in therapy into awareness and conscious change between sessions.
You aren't committing to a fixed number of sessions. Some people come with a particular focus and work for a shorter period; others value the depth that develops through longer-term therapy. We can review this together as we go.
What matters most at the beginning is that you feel able to be yourself, that we can build trust and honesty, and that you feel heard, understood and comfortable enough to explore what genuinely matters to you.
