About me and my therapy practice
I believe therapy begins with relationship. Feeling genuinely heard, understood and accepted can create the safety needed to explore experiences that may have felt difficult to understand, express or carry alone.
My way of working is warm, reflective and collaborative. I am not here to tell you how you should feel or who you should become. Instead, I offer a space where we can become curious about your experiences together, exploring what has shaped you, what may be happening for you now, and what you might need moving forward.
I recognise that we all experience and make sense of the world differently. Our histories, relationships, identities and ways of communicating can influence how we understand ourselves and connect with others. Some people arrive in therapy knowing exactly what they want to talk about, while others simply have a sense that something does not feel right. Both are equally welcome.
I work at your pace and aim to create a space where there is no pressure to communicate or process things in a particular way. There can be room for conversation, reflection, silence, uncertainty and humour. For people who have spent a long time adapting themselves to the expectations of others, therapy can also offer an opportunity to begin exploring who they are beneath those expectations.
Rather than seeing therapy as something that needs to “fix” you, I see it as an opportunity to develop greater understanding, compassion and choice. Together, we can explore patterns, relationships and experiences while also recognising your strengths, values and the ways you have learned to navigate life.
Ultimately, my hope is that therapy provides a relationship in which you can feel increasingly able to be yourself, understand yourself more deeply, and move towards a life that feels more authentic and meaningful to you.
Practice description
I offer individual counselling to adults experiencing a range of emotional and relational difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, life transitions, uncertainty, overwhelm, and questions around identity or direction.
People come to counselling for many different reasons. You may be struggling with something specific, noticing patterns that keep repeating, feeling disconnected from yourself or others, or simply finding life harder to manage. You do not need to have everything clearly understood or know exactly where to begin. Part of our work can be making sense of that together.
My practice is integrative, drawing particularly on Person-Centred Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy and Existential Therapy. This allows me to work flexibly, recognising that no single approach suits everyone.
The therapeutic relationship is central to how I work. I aim to offer a calm, dependable and non-judgemental space where you can speak openly and feel accepted as you are. Therapy is collaborative, and we will regularly consider what feels helpful and what you need from our sessions.
I am mindful that people communicate, process emotions and experience relationships differently. You may need more time to think, prefer direct communication, find emotions difficult to identify, or have spent years adapting or masking parts of yourself. My approach is sensitive to these differences rather than assuming there is one “right” way to engage in therapy.
Together, we may explore past experiences, present difficulties, patterns of thinking or relating, self-compassion, values and future choices. At other times, simply having somewhere to stop, think and be heard can be valuable in itself.
I will work alongside you with curiosity, honesty and compassion, helping you develop greater understanding, self-acceptance, clarity and confidence in finding your own way forward.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another and to explore what has brought you to counselling. There is no expectation for you to share everything straight away, and we will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
We will usually talk about what you are hoping for from therapy, any difficulties or concerns you are currently experiencing, and what may feel most important to begin exploring. I will also explain a little about how I work and give you the opportunity to ask any questions about counselling or the therapeutic process.
I do not see the first session as a formal assessment or something you need to prepare for. Instead, it is a collaborative conversation that helps us both consider whether working together feels right for you.
We will also briefly discuss practical aspects of our work together, including confidentiality, boundaries, session arrangements and what you can expect from me as your counsellor.
Above all, the first session is about creating a safe and supportive starting point. You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what to say or where to begin. We can find that together.
