About me and my therapy practice
Before qualifying as a Humanistic Counsellor, I worked for many years with a wide range of people, abroad and in the UK. This, I believe, has been a preparation for my work as counsellor. It helps me to understand the many varied backgrounds and life experiences that my clients bring to their sessions.
Living abroad for a total of 7 years has helped me understand the stresses of integrating into an unfamiliar culture, of being an “outsider” and of using a language that is not your mother-tongue.
My second “life", in the UK, was first as teacher-trainer for EFL, then as SENDCo in both secondary and primary schools. Supporting parents of children with Special Educational Needs, I understand the stresses at home as well at school, if a child’s needs are not met or understood. The fight to obtain funding and to place and/or support a child, adequately, takes its toll.
My work in schools helped me to understand the pressures families experience in so many ways: financial pressures; addiction or mental illness within the family; shared parenting; adoption; having a family member in prison. Liaising with professionals such as social workers, psychologists, paediatricians and therapists, I know the impact this has on all involved.
My current therapy work includes clients whose lives are touched by cancer – either themselves personally or those they love. They bring the grief of coming to terms with their own changed life-circumstances, or of bereavement.
I also work with persons who are in, or who have left, an abusive relationship. Sometimes they have physically left the abuser but the abuse persists by other means.
The effects of trauma are pervasive and long-term.
I believe my life experience helps me to relate to others, to be truly empathic.
I would like to extend my warm welcome to you, as my unique and individual client.
Practice description
I am a Humanistic Counsellor - I will listen, truly listen, and help you find yourself and your own direction. You have the knowledge and the understanding within you. Expressing yourself and being heard, and hearing your story reflected back, opens the pathway to change.
Challenges that arise on our way through life: bereavement and grief; the impact of long-term illness; pressures of parenting; loneliness and separation from loved ones; integration into a new culture; recovery from abusive relationships; life choices - these can be helped through therapy.
Please be mindful that, as I am not a coach, I will not give you advice, although I may sign-post you, if that is helpful.
My first session
Our initial contact will be a no-fee telephone assessment lasting approx. 20-30 mins. You will be able to say what you are looking for, and we can decide if I am a suitable therapist for you, and whether my availability fits your schedule.
If you would like an initial free telephone assessment, please send me an email with your contact details, and suggested times when I can safely call.
