About me and my therapy practice
I am a humanistic counsellor and psychotherapist, and a registered member of the BACP. My work is grounded in the belief that meaningful change becomes possible when we feel genuinely heard, accepted, and understood.
I offer a warm, compassionate, and non-judgemental space where you can bring whatever is troubling you. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, low mood, loss, relationship difficulties, stress, life transitions, or a sense of feeling stuck, I aim to provide a therapeutic relationship that supports you to explore your experiences openly and honestly.
My approach is integrative and rooted in Person-Centred and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). I believe that each person is unique and that there is no single way of understanding distress. Rather than focusing on advice or solutions, I work alongside you to help make sense of your thoughts, feelings, relationships, and life experiences.
Emotions often carry important information about what matters to us. Together, we can explore difficult feelings with curiosity and compassion, helping you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, develop self-acceptance, and discover new ways of moving forward.
At the heart of my work is the belief that therapy is not about fixing what is wrong with you. It is about creating a space where you can feel safe enough to be yourself, understand your experiences more fully, and reconnect with your own strengths, values, and capacity for growth.
I work relationally, collaboratively, and at a pace that feels right for you. My aim is to offer therapy that feels genuine, grounded, and relevant to the realities of everyday life.
Practice description
Grounded Therapy is built on the values of honest conversation, acceptance, and understanding. I provide counselling and psychotherapy in a calm, welcoming environment where you can take a step back from the demands of daily life and focus on what is important to you.
My private practice is based in a peaceful village between Thirsk and Helmsley, on the edge of the North York Moors. The therapy space offers privacy, comfort, and a chance to slow down and reflect away from the pressures of everyday life.
Alongside face-to-face counselling, I offer online therapy and walk-and-talk sessions for those who find being in nature helps them think, feel, and reflect more freely. Before training as a therapist, I worked in ecology and environmental education, and I understand the restorative value that natural spaces can offer.
Sessions are tailored to your individual needs. Some clients come with a clear concern they would like to work through, while others are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships, or recurring patterns in their lives.
You can expect warmth, empathy, honesty, and respect from me, as well as a commitment to building a relationship where you feel safe, listened to, and accepted. My hope is that therapy becomes a space where you can speak openly, explore difficult experiences, and develop a stronger connection with yourself and the life you want to lead.
Grounded Therapy: therapy for real life.
My first session
Taking the first step into therapy can feel daunting, and it is completely understandable to feel nervous, uncertain, or unsure of where to begin. The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, explore what has brought you to therapy, and consider whether working together feels right for you.
I will invite you to talk about what is happening in your life at the moment and what has led you to seek counselling. There is no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what to say, and no pressure to share more than feels comfortable. We will go at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Alongside exploring what has brought you to therapy, I will explain how I work, discuss confidentiality, and answer any questions you may have. The first session is as much an opportunity for you to get a feel for me as it is for me to understand what support you are looking for. Research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy, so it is important that you feel comfortable and able to be yourself.
If we decide to continue working together, we can begin to think about what you hope to gain from therapy and how I might support you in that process.
My hope is that you leave the first session having experienced what Grounded Therapy is all about: honest conversation, acceptance, and understanding. Whether or not we decide to work together, I want you to feel heard, respected, and supported in taking this important step for yourself.
