About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Jo, and I'm glad you've found your way here.
Reaching out isn't always easy, especially when things have felt heavy for a while. You don't need the right words, or to have anything worked out. We'll take it from wherever feels right for you.
It might be that you've been feeling confused about what's going on for you, or misunderstood by the people around you.
Perhaps stress has been building, and you're not sleeping well or finding it hard to switch off. Maybe you find yourself worrying about your health, or the same conflicts keep surfacing in your relationships. You might be holding it all together on the outside, while inside your mind rarely gets a moment's rest.
Whatever you're bringing, there's room for it here.
I work with people experiencing stress, anxiety (including health anxiety), depression, trauma, OCD, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties.
I have experience working with neurodivergence, including ADHD, and supporting those exploring their identity after discovering they're neurodivergent later in life.
Above all, when we work together, I see you as a whole person, with your own story, strengths and ways of making sense of the world.
Life can sometimes bring real struggle, but I believe it also holds possibility, and the freedom to choose what comes next.
I hold an FdA Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy (with Distinction) from Sheffield Hallam University, and I'm continuing my studies towards a Level 6 BA (Hons). I'm a registered member of the BACP and a trauma-informed practitioner. I also hold a Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma, awarded by the National Council for Hypnotherapy and accredited by NCFE.
As well as my private practice, Illuminated Minds Clinic, I work with a charity in partnership with NHS Neighbourhood Mental Health Services, supporting people from all walks of life.
Practice description
Therapy with me is a collaborative process, shaped around you. I won't judge you or tell you how to live your life, because you know your life better than anyone. What I offer is my full attention, my curiosity, and a steady space to make sense of what you're going through, at a pace that feels right.
My approach is integrative and relational, with person-centred counselling at its core. Every person is unique, so drawing on a wider range of skills and training, I tailor our work to you as an individual, weaving in CBT and solution-focused approaches where they may help, always working collaboratively with you.
My practice is trauma-informed, and I also offer psychoeducation, so you can understand more about what's happening in your mind and body.
As a qualified hypnotherapist, I can bring hypnotherapy into our work if it feels right for you.
Our relationship is at the centre of this work, and we'll build it at your pace.
Together, we can work to quieten racing thoughts, soften the inner critic, and tune in to what your body has been holding. We can explore the experiences that have made you who you are, find practical tools for day-to-day life, and look at the people and connections that matter most in your life.
Some sessions may be more reflective, while in others I may share practical strategies to take with you into the days between. We'll check in regularly about how the work feels for you, and we can change direction whenever you need to.
Sessions last 50 minutes. We can meet face to face at Illuminated Minds Clinic, my cosy therapy room in Hyde, or online or by telephone, whichever fits your life best.
Over time, many people find they feel clearer about who they are, and begin to meet themselves with a little more kindness.
My first session
Taking the first step can feel daunting, so we start with a free 20-minute telephone consultation before any sessions are booked.
It's a chance for you to tell me a little about what you'd like to work on. If you're not sure yet, that's ok too.
I can share how I work and answer any questions, so we can both get a sense of whether working together feels right. There's no obligation to book a session. It's really important that you find a therapist who feels right for you.
I work with honesty and integrity. If I believe another service or type of support would suit you better, I'll say so and help you find it. What matters most to me is that you get the right help, even if that isn't with me.
In our first session, we'll contract together, agreeing what we'll work on and how we'll work together collaboratively. There's nothing you need to prepare.
If anything feels too much, we can pause or take a break. I'm always led by what feels right for you.
Getting in touch takes courage, and I'd be honoured to hear your story
