About me and my therapy practice

Perhaps you're reading this because life feels harder than it should right now. Maybe you're lying awake going over things in your head, worrying about the future or replaying conversations. Perhaps you're the person everyone relies on, yet privately you're struggling yourself. Or you may simply feel low, lost or unlike yourself, without quite knowing why.

I'm Chris, an integrative counsellor based in Woking. I offer a warm, relaxed and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what's happening in your life, without feeling you have to put on a brave face or pretend everything is ok.

My approach is primarily person-centred. I believe that feeling heard, understood and accepted can help us make sense of difficult experiences and begin to see things differently. I also draw on psychodynamic ideas to explore how past experiences may shape the present, alongside CBT techniques to help you recognise and work with unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. My approach is tailored to you, your circumstances and what you want to get from counselling.

Through my private practice and counselling work in a hospice and schools, I've supported people experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including grief, loss, anxiety, depression and relationship problems.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent more than 25 years working as a journalist, much of that time covering health and wellbeing. I’ve also worked in schools as a teaching assistant, supporting young people with their educational and emotional needs, particularly those experiencing behavioural difficulties or living with conditions such as ADHD, autism and PDA.

You don't need to be in crisis to seek counselling. If something is troubling you, we can start there and work things through together, at a pace that feels right for you.

Practice description

I work with adults experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, stress, low mood, depression, grief, loneliness, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, family conflict, work-related burnout and the emotional impact of difficult past experiences.

You might find yourself putting everyone else's needs first, struggling to switch off or being harder on yourself than you would ever be towards someone else. Perhaps you spend a lot of time worrying about what others think, find yourself caught in negative thinking patterns or keep responding to situations in ways you'd like to change. You may be carrying something from the past that still affects you today, or facing changes in life that feel difficult to navigate, maybe a loss or break-down in a relationship.

Our sessions are a space to explore these concerns without the pressure of having to find an immediate solution. I'll listen carefully and ask questions to help you reflect on your experiences, feelings and relationships. Where appropriate, we may also explore practical ways of managing difficult thoughts and responding differently to situations that cause distress.

Counselling isn't about changing who you are or getting everything right. It's about developing a better understanding of yourself, recognising patterns that may no longer be serving you and consider what you would like to change. Sometimes progress begins with a small shift in perspective; at other times, it involves making sense of experiences you've carried for a long time.

I offer sessions online and in person in Woking and Byfleet. Sessions last 50 minutes and cost £70, with concessionary rates available for students and people on low incomes.

If you'd like to explore whether counselling might help, you're welcome to get in touch for an initial conversation.

My first session

It is completely normal to feel nervous about your first counselling session. You may be wondering what you'll be expected to say, whether you'll be judged, or if your problems are "serious enough" to need counselling. You might even have written a message to a counsellor and then hesitated before sending it.

These feelings are understandable. Starting something unfamiliar can be daunting, particularly when you're already dealing with a lot.

Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin exploring what's brought you to counselling. I'll invite you to share what's been happening and what you'd like help with, but there's no need to prepare anything beforehand or explain everything at once.

We’ll talk about how I work, confidentiality and its limits, and any questions or concerns you may have. We'll also discuss what you’re hoping to get from counselling and consider how we might work together.

You’re in control of what you share. If something feels difficult to talk about, we don't have to explore it before you're ready. There's no expectation that you should arrive with everything worked out.

It's equally important that you have the opportunity to decide whether I'm the right counsellor for you. You can ask questions, tell me what you're looking for and take some time to consider whether working together feels like a good fit.

You don't have to know where to begin. Sometimes, simply talking to someone about what's been going on is a meaningful place to start.
