About me and my therapy practice
I am a qualified Psychodynamic Counsellor and work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties. My approach is grounded in the belief that our experiences, relationships and ways of relating to ourselves can have a significant influence on how we feel and respond to life in the present.
I offer a warm, thoughtful and non-judgemental therapeutic space in which you can talk openly about whatever feels important to you. I work collaboratively, taking time to understand your individual circumstances, rather than making assumptions about what you may be experiencing.
Psychodynamic counselling can involve looking beyond the immediate difficulties that bring you to therapy and considering whether there are underlying thoughts, feelings, experiences or relationship patterns that may be contributing to how you feel. Sometimes these patterns are difficult to recognise on our own. Developing a greater awareness of them can help us to understand ourselves differently and consider new ways of responding.
The pace and focus of therapy will vary from person to person. I do not believe there is a single way of working that suits everyone, and I aim to listen carefully and adapt my approach to what you need. I provide a consistent and confidential setting where you can take time to reflect, make sense of your experiences and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.
I recognise that beginning counselling can feel daunting. My aim is to create a therapeutic relationship in which you feel heard, respected and able to work at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Practice description
I work with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. People come to counselling for many different reasons, and you do not necessarily need to know exactly what is wrong before seeking support.
I work with difficulties including anxiety, low mood, intrusive or overwhelming thoughts, relationship difficulties, the effects of trauma, food and body image concerns, adjustment to physical illness, loss and bereavement, and periods of significant change or uncertainty.
You may have a particular difficulty that you would like help with, or you may have a more general sense that something is not quite right. You might find yourself repeating patterns in relationships, feeling stuck, overwhelmed by your thoughts or emotions, or struggling to understand why you respond to situations in certain ways.
My practice is based near Bath, Somerset, and I offer weekly, 50-minute in-person sessions at the same time each week. I work with clients on an open-ended basis, without a predetermined number of sessions or fixed end date. We can review the work together as therapy develops and consider what feels appropriate.
I aim to provide a safe, confidential and respectful environment where you can speak freely without fear of judgement. I understand that talking about personal experiences can take time, and there is no expectation that you will arrive with everything worked out. We can begin with whatever feels most present for you and gradually develop an understanding of what may be underlying your difficulties.
I am committed to maintaining high professional and ethical standards in my practice and to continuing my professional development.
My first session
I offer two initial consultation sessions before beginning ongoing counselling. These sessions provide an opportunity for us to meet and consider whether counselling with me feels right for you.
The first consultation is a chance to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you are hoping for from therapy. I will be interested in hearing about your current circumstances and the difficulties you are experiencing, as well as anything you feel may be relevant to understanding what is happening for you.
There is no expectation that you will know exactly what to say or where to begin. We can take the time to talk at a pace that feels comfortable, and you can ask any questions you may have about counselling or my approach.
The second consultation allows us to think further about what you are looking for and whether psychodynamic counselling may be a helpful way of working for you. We can discuss how we might approach the work, what you would like to focus on and whether we feel able to establish a productive therapeutic relationship.
These consultations are also a chance for you to experience what it is like to talk with me and to consider whether you feel comfortable bringing your thoughts and experiences into the room. I believe that feeling able to develop trust and openness is an important part of the therapeutic process, and the consultations give us time to consider this together.
