About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I’m Richard. I practice the Person-Centred Approach and offer a warm, empathic space where you can pause, reflect, and express yourself - without judgement. My aim is to create an authentic and compassionate environment, where you feel safe to explore whatever’s going on for you, at your own pace.
Alongside my counselling practice, I maintain a 30-year career in the performing arts and culture sector as a professional singer and artistic director, working in opera houses and concert halls across Europe. Navigating a high-performance environment means experiencing and coming to terms with constant pressure and the self-doubt that can creep in when compassion is in short supply.
These experiences have deepened my belief in the healing power of empathy, understanding, and human connection - of being truly seen, heard, and accepted exactly as we are.
I bring this belief into my counselling practice, along with genuine respect for your unique experience and your own process. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, facing a significant life transition or feeling out of step with yourself, I’ll meet you where you are, with warmth, kindness and curiosity.
Practice description
At the heart of the Person-Centred Approach is a belief that every person has an inherent capacity for growth and the fulfilment of their potential. But life can be tough. There are times when something doesn't feel right and we can't make sense of it, when we're suffering and can't see a way forward.
I don’t see my role as an expert telling you what to do, giving advice or providing solutions. Instead, I aim to offer a warm, empathic and compassionate environment in which you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences openly.
For me, counselling is a collaborative process - we share the experience of the human condition. I will listen to you with empathy, and seek to understand things from your perspective, without judgement. I may reflect something I hear or notice, or gently invite you to stay with a moment that seems important, but I will always work with you at your pace and with what you choose to bring.
Over time, I hope our work can offer you a safe and confidential space in which you can come to understand yourself more fully, recognising your needs and emotions and developing greater trust in your own judgement.
Whether you are experiencing anxiety or self-doubt, navigating relationships or change, dealing with loss, or simply feeling that something in your life isn’t quite right, we can explore it together – with warmth, openness and curiosity.
My first session
Ahead of our first session, we'll have a short chat on the phone, just to say hello, answer any initial questions and confirm our arrangements.
In our first session, whether online or in person, I'll introduce myself and explain a little about how I work. We'll also discuss our counselling agreement, including confidentiality and the practical arrangements for our sessions.
Most importantly, this is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other. You can talk about what's brought you to counselling, what you're hoping for, or simply where you find yourself at the moment.
There's no expectation to have everything worked out or to know exactly what you want to say. We can take things at your pace.
