I've been in professional practice for 35 years. I provide one-to-one counselling and supervision. I work with adults. Sessions are online or in person at my therapy room in Marsden, near Huddersfield.
Talking to a counsellor gives you a chance to reflect on what's going on for you. I will not judge or criticise. I will ask questions which help us both understand your situation.
Client and counsellor figure things out together: it’s a co-operative process. You find words for what’s happening… I listen and check my understanding. We help each other to create a shared picture we can work with. This shared picture is not something you could have come up with on your own. With my support you may experiment with new behaviour and learn from the results.
The only way to find out what counselling feels like is to try it. You are welcome to book an initial phone/zoom/whatsapp so we can discuss working together. This will be for 30 minutes and is free. After this meeting we can decide if we want to work together.
Sessions last 60 minutes and take place at planned times. It is often best to start out weekly but sessions can be spaced out later, as you get more control of your issue. Counselling ends whenever you say.

Practice description
When working on an issue it is helpful to have regular meetings. The work will involve noticing things happening in sessions and between sessions, ie becoming aware of things happening between you and others, and things happening within yourself. You can try new behaviour between sessions, knowing you have my support to think about the results.
The work we do together will involve guided awareness exercises to help you calm your nervous system. Gradually your body can become a resource and refuge rather than a threat. If your body gets triggered into alarm or shutdown states when you talk or think about past experiences, we will first work to regulate your bodily state. Once you have the ability to calm yourself, you can decide if you want to talk through the traumatic events themselves. Sometimes learning the skills of self-regulation is enough. This will be your decision.

Free initial phone/zoom/whatsapp meeting of 30 minutes. After this meeting we can decide if we want to work together.
