About me and my therapy practice
You may have spent years trying to change your relationship with food.Perhaps you have tried diets, plans, apps or weight-loss programmes, or promised yourself that tomorrow will be different.Yet familiar patterns keep returning. You may find yourself eating when you are not physically hungry, reaching for food when you are stressed , lonely, bored or overwhelmed, or feeling unable to stop once you have started.
Perhaps food is your reward at the end of a difficult day.You may eat in secret, fee guilty afterwards, or find yourself caught in a cycle of restriction, overeating and starting again.
If this sounds familiar, the problem may not be a lack of knowledge or willpower.
My particular are of expertise is in emotional eating.I don't offer diets or tell you what you should or shouldn't eat.Instead we become curious about your relationship with food and what it may be doing for you.
Together we can explore when these patterns began and what lies beneath them: your experiences around food and body image, messages absorbed from family, friends, magazines, advertising and social media and wider societal expectations of how we should look and eat.We can also explore the part that stress, loss, relationships, identity and belonging may play. Food may have become a way to comfort yourself, reward yourself, numb difficult feelings to escape from them for a while.
Rather than asking, "why can't I just stop?", therapy offers a different question: "what am I really hungry for?"
Understanding the answer can be the beginning of lasting change.
My first session
Our first session is a chance for us to meet and talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you hope might be different .
There is no need to arrive knowing exactly what to say or where to begin. We can take our time exploring what is happening for you, and I will ask questions where helpful to begin to get to know you and understand what you need from therapy.
Most importantly, it is an opportunity to see whether you feel comfortable with me and whether working together feels right for both of us.You are welcome to ask questions, and there is no pressure to make a decision straight away.
